Dear colleague
We started the month celebrating the NHS reaching its milestone 74th birthday and recognised team members who shared their birthday on this special day. We also featured one of our STAR Award winners, who was invited to celebrate the NHS anniversary at No.10 Downing Street.
Meanwhile, the UHSussex@Prides2022 celebrations continued, with Trust colleagues and staff LGBTQI+ Network attending Worthing Pride and Trans Pride in Brighton. What's more, we shone a light on World Hepatitis Day, welcomed a state-of-the-art X-ray room, and heard from more staff about their views on the 3Ts Stage 1 Building.
And finally, it was a month of achievements across the Trust, with a Cavall Star Award winner, a digital health bursary award, maternity staff graduating the Patient First programme, and much, much more.
So please grab a cuppa and take some time out to catch up on our news.
Thank you,
Communications

3Ts Redevelopment – First Impressions of the Stage 1 Building
|
|
There is a growing sense of excitement about Stage 1 of the 3Ts Redevelopment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital that is due to open early in 2023. The reactions of staff looking round their services’ new homes have ranged from impressed to amazed.
“It is the amount of space that first strikes everyone,” says Eoin O’Flynn, Clinical Planning Manager for 3Ts and Radiographer. “Once the sheer scale of the building begins to sink in, the individual improvements then make a real impression. These always include how much better the experience will be for patients and how the more spacious departments will help staff manage the day to day challenges of care.”

Through ‘dedication and hard work’, maternity staff graduated Patient First programme

Staff from Princess Royal and Royal Sussex County maternity wards completed their Patient First Improvement System (PFIS) training.
PFIS, which is delivered by the Kaizen team, develops colleagues' ability to solve problems and improve performance. It recognises that those who do the work should be the ones improving the work and it empowers them to find ways of resolving issues.
Maternity colleagues from Brighton and Hayward’s Heath were amongst the first to complete the programme since the pandemic.

Patient First Planet First news
|
|
In July, our series of stories published on the intranet explored how the public perceived sustainability in healthcare, how they viewed changes to health care that support sustainability and what we could do to better integrate their concerns and views into the actions we take in delivering our Green Plans.
In the joint collaborative piece of work alongside Sussex Health and Care Partnership, Care Without Carbon, and Surrey County Council, we surveyed over 800 people representative of Surrey and Sussex populations on topics including:
- What patients think about digitally based NHS care options
- What patients think about the NHS carbon footprint
- What patients think about more sustainable medicines and medical equipment when in NHS care
Visit our Green Plan page to find out more about the Trust's net zero ambitions, and if you would like to champion sustainability in your department, sign up as a UHSussex Green Ambassador by email.
