One year ago, The Alexander Company began work to rehabilitate six historic buildings on the Milwaukee Soldiers Home grounds – including the iconic Old Main. In celebration of this milestone, and in anticipation of the completion of renovation work in Spring 2021, the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA) is giving you a sneak peak into the rehabilitation of Old Main.

Though six historic Soldiers Home buildings – including the iconic Old Main are currently being renovated into 101 supportive housing units for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, some of the district’s key historic buildings remain vacant and endangered. 

Ward Memorial TheaterThe Governor’s Mansion and the Soldiers Home Chapel, for example, remain unused and deteriorating.

MPA is encouraging the VA to reissue a request for proposals seeking a developer to rehabilitate these three notable, vacant historic buildings.
