 TORAH PORTION OF THE WEEK
Bechukkotai (By My Decrees)
Leviticus 26:3-27:34

* God promises that if the people of Israel will keep God's commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell secure in their homeland. But God also delivers a harsh "rebuke," warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with God.
* God says: "Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away; nor will I ever abhor them, to destroy them and to break My covenant with them; for I am Adonai their God."
* The Parshah concludes with the rules on how to calculate the values of different types of pledges made to God, and the mitzvah of tithing produce and livestock.
Bechukkotai is the last book of Leviticus and is known for its rules, statutes, blessings and curses. God shows God's love through discipline and fear and makes us truly aware of what can happen to us if we do not obey the commandments - and all the good things that can happen if we do. Vayikra (Leviticus) contains 859 verses, 27 chapters, 10 portions. "Chazak, chazak, v'nitchazayk!" Be strong, be strong, let us strengthen one another is the traditional saying as we finish a book of Torah.
