Labor strikes deal with Greens for Nature Repair bill support

New laws that would allow miners, farmers and other landholders to cash in on nature-boosting practices have passed the Australian parliament … In return for the Greens' support to pass the Nature Repair bill, the government is expected to amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act so that the federal environment minister could have a greater say on how mining projects are approved.

Significantly, the changes would see a tighter "water trigger" applied to mining developments, allowing greater federal scrutiny to be applied when water supplies are likely to be affected.

New research finds advertisers are regularly making meaningless claims that their products are 'clean', 'green' and 'sustainable'

How environmentally friendly are the goods that you are buying? (Ready Made Pexels).

Consumers are increasingly considering the environmental impact of a product when making purchasing decisions, and marketers know it. But exactly how environmentally friendly are the goods you are buying? And how true are the big "green" claims advertisers are making in online ads?

ACCC guidelines are that companies need to have evidence to back up claims they make about their environmental sustainability, to ensure they are not false and misleading under consumer law.

El Niño usually brings dry weather, so why have we just had weeks of heavy rain?

Last month, record daily rainfall totals fell across several parts of the New South Wales south coast and monthly totals were also above average for most of the NT and Queensland. The downpours have defied the odds of a dry weather for spring, stacked heavily by the major climate driver El Niño, as well as other dry influences.

Woolworths and Coles to face senate inquiry over possible price gouging during cost of living crisis

Tasmanian Greens Senator Nick McKim told the Guardian that the Senate inquiry is a “critical step toward dismantling the market concentration that’s led to unfair pricing and stifled competition.”

And a different perspective on the topic …

Coles and Woolworths set to face a Senate inquiry. NZ has been down this road before

At Australia's annual Christmas lunch the biggest slice of pie will again go to Coles and Woolworths, and while a new inquiry looks set to examine their profit margins, New Zealand offers a lesson in just how difficult it is to disrupt a duopoly.

Sprinklers or drippers?

Coen is currently using sprinklers for his 20 and 10-year-old grove and wants to investigate transitioning over to drip irrigation. He’s specifically keen on advice about: suggested layouts; dripline or drip emitters?; are there going to be issues with the rootzone accessing the water?; should this project be done in the winter months? Information on any other considerations would also be appreciated.

If you can assist with advice and information, please email info@wattlehillolives.com.au.

Brush olive oil around the rim of a pot to prevent water boiling over

As much as we try to pay attention to a pot of water when it's boiling on the stove, it's inevitable that we won't watch it like a hawk the entire time. But, even glancing away for just a few seconds can be enough time for a pot to boil over, which leaves you with a mess. Luckily, a simple tip can safeguard your stove while giving you the wiggle room to take your eyes off the pot. All it takes is a little olive oil.

Considering Health, olive oil is not so expensive after all

Is olive oil expensive now? It depends on how you look at it. If you compare prices to a year or two ago, yes. If you consider the price per serving, the cost compared to other purchases, and extra virgin olive oil’s contributions to your food’s flavor and health benefits, no: we are not paying as much as this cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet is worth.

We agree!
