NEW IBERIA, La. –
Summer is the time for fun activities for youth, and as part of its yearly program IPAL, will again hold a summer youth musical and a Theater Camp! The Theater Camp is for kids, ages 6-9 and 10-12, and the summer musical is for those aged 6-19.
According to former IPAL president, Kim Monroe, “Getting young people involved in theater is one of IPAL’s goals. It provides unique experiences, builds great friendships, and gives an appreciation of the arts and in particular theater which is invaluable.”
IPAL’s Summer Theater Camp will be held July 9 - 13 for ages 6-9 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., as well as July 16 - 20 for ages 10-12. Students will have an opportunity to learn about theater, costumes, makeup, acting, singing and dancing, as well as some technical aspects of theater. Cost of the camp is $100 per child. There are a limited number of spaces available, and the form is available on IPAL’s Facebook page, or by contacting Hollie Guidry via email at
HollieGuidry97@yahoo.com. Those interested may also send an email to
IPAL@cox.net.
This year’s themes are “Camp Rock!” for the 6-9 year olds, and “Broadway Bound” for the 10-12 year olds. Your child will only be guaranteed a spot once payment and registration are received; you will receive a confirmation call or email once it has been received. No registration will be accepted after July 1.
IPAL’s summer youth musical, “Annie,” will be presented July 12 - 22. Director Kate Gulotta has set auditions for Saturday, April 28 from 12 - 3 p.m. and Sunday, April 29 from 1 - 4 p.m. Auditions are open for students ages 6-19, and will involve singing, reading from the script, and dancing. Those coming to try out may bring musical accompaniment or backing track on a mobile device, or a cd with a cd player if they wish, and then they will learn a small part of one of the chorus dances, as well as read a scene if asked.
Auditions will be held at the Essanee Theater, 126 Iberia St. in downtown New Iberia. Students do not need to attend both audition dates, and the cast announcement will happen via email.
Rehearsals will begin May 3, and will be Mondays through Thursdays from 3 - 6 p.m. until school lets out, at which point the time of rehearsals will move to 1 - 4 p.m. every week until performances begin, plus a few Saturday or Sunday rehearsals when the opening of the show nears, which you will be notified of in advance. The 3 - 6 p.m. rehearsals will be mostly music rehearsals, so not everyone will need to attend every rehearsal. The fee is $75 but scholarships are available for those unable to pay this fee.
