Art Show Success!

On May 19th, Art with a Heart held its Teacher, Volunteer, and Staff Art Show. Big thanks to everyone who attended. Also, thank you to our hosts at the Goldfinch Room at Whitehall Mill, Xibitz and Wayne Nicolette for the wall rental and support, the delicious food by Zeffert & Gold and our neighbors at The Wine Source for donating all of the drinks. If you purchased a piece of art – THANK YOU – we would love for you to post a photo of it in its new home on Facebook or Instagram – and don’t forget to tag Art with a Heart.

Road to 25 Spotlight: Faith Freeman & Ellen Miller!

Meet Art with a Heart teachers (and artists), Faith Freeman and Ellen Miller. Both of these powerhouses teach at several sites for Art with a Heart and since the fall of 2023, have formed a great team for the Baltimore Transition Connection students. Faith credits this group of young adults for making her a more flexible art teacher - meeting the needs of each student at whatever their level. She is thrilled by their desire to create and express themselves through art. Ellen's intention for this group centers on art being a vehicle for building a sense of community and mutual respect for one another. The gift she gets in return is hard to measure but goes way beyond her expectations. Thank you Faith and Ellen, we are grateful for all you do!

Programming

May was brimming with creativity and community engagement at Art with a Heart. The programming team hosted "Find Your Way to Pre-K," welcoming over 150 families to learn about Pre-K in Baltimore City Public Schools. The children enjoyed creating artwork inspired by Eric Carle. One parent said “I cannot say enough about this event. My kids talked about it for the entire weekend and it really got my son excited about PreK! I truly love how well organized it was, how kind and patient all the staff was, and the concept as well. Thank you all.” In addition to Find Your Way to Pre-K, Art with a Heart provided students of all ages with engaging art experiences through its ongoing classes and programs, including: vibrant mixed-media kites, captivating watercolor resists, abstract drawings using the principles of color theory, and self-portrait collages inspired by the dynamic works of Afro-Caribbean artist, Brianna McCarthy.

Also, for the third year, Art with a Heart planned and organized Child First Authority's Annual "Show What You Know." Over 800 parents, students, teachers, partners, and supporters attended the academic and visual art presentations. The participating students hail from 15 local schools in 12 different Baltimore City neighborhoods who participate in Child First programs.

Impressionists

The monthly Impressionists meetups are the place to be! This energetic group of volunteers has a lot of fun while helping Art with a Heart in its work. Whether glazing or painting, cutting paper into shapes, molding clay or some other job, the group is having fun! From one volunteer last month, “My job is really stressful, so this kind of volunteering is relaxing. It feels good to know I’m helping out with something that matters, bringing art to people in Baltimore. And it’s fun to meet new people.” Each month, the hands-on work varies and volunteers learn as they work, no art skills required. HeARTworks/HeARTwares

This summer, Art with a Heart is thrilled to announce six dynamic HeARTworks programs designed to empower and inspire our community's youth. Among these, we are proud to host two special Youthworks sites: one focusing on the creative possibilities of digital design and the other on developing project management skills through visual arts. All of our programs are individually crafted to provide valuable skills, foster creativity, and prepare participants for future success. Youthworks, a program in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development, allows youth and community partners to collaborate, creating a meaningful, paid employment opportunity that enhances youth's job skills. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with resume reviews and mock interviews, currently scheduled for the last two weeks of July. Your expertise and guidance can make a significant difference in preparing our students for their future careers. Please contact Alex Decker at alex@artwithaheart.net to learn more!

Special Projects

This month, Special Projects completed the last of three residencies at Lois T. Murray Elementary/Middle School. Students painted 200 seabird silhouettes in colors spanning the color wheel from yellow to blue for installation in the school's cafeteria. The mural of ascending birds reminds the viewer of the students’ determination, hard work, and successes and joins two other beautification projects created this year in their school.

Art of Leadership

It was a rainy Sunday, but Cohort 9 brought positivity and energy to their spring outing at Outward Bound!  They started with team building activities and then tackled obstacle courses as a team. An outstanding quality of this group is their support of one another using positive affirmations. They cheered each other on at Outward Bound during all activities.

Cohort 9's capstone art project is underway! In early May, leadership students drafted a design for a mural on the wall facing Pauline Fauntleroy Park in the historic Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood. The mural is almost finished and the students are looking forward to their Community Art Day on June 2nd, when community members, students, and families are welcome to join in the fun and grab a paint brush!

Community Art and Service

Community Art and Service completed not one, not two, but three installations this month! The Baltimore Washington Medical Center's COVID-19 memorial mural was unveiled in a poignant ceremony in mid-May. Service groups contributed their time and talent over several days to install and refine the William S. Baer School's multi-media mural. Volunteers also completed the restoration and beautification of the Funnel Cake King's food truck which had been previously vandalized. We are anxiously awaiting the truck's unveiling sometime in June.

Community Art and Service also hosted Jewish Community Services and facilitated four different community art projects with this wonderful group of students.

Thank You Volunteers!
