PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE

Chamber Opposes City of Santa Barbara Draft Rent Stabilization Ordinance

We oppose the City’s draft Residential Rent Stabilization Ordinance. We strongly support ensuring housing is attainable for all community members. However, our regional housing crisis is fundamentally a supply problem, and rent stabilization disincentivizes investment

into local housing stock.

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Councilmembers reviewed the draft ordinance and provided direction to staff on potential revisions. The draft and a related Ellis Act/Just Cause Ordinance is available for public review until July 10. The ordinance is scheduled for formal introduction and adoption on July 28. Read our letter to the City Council. Learn more on the City's website.

Chamber Opposes City of Santa Barbara Proposed Short Term Rental Ordinance

The Chamber opposes the City’s draft Short-Term Rental (STR) Ordinance and advocates for a more holistic STR enforcement program that balances housing feasibility, neighborhood character, the visitor economy, and generating necessary tax revenue.

At Tuesday’s Ordinance Committee meeting, Committee members approved the ordinance in a 2-0-1 vote and the ordinance is scheduled to go to the City Council in September.

Read our letter to the Ordinance Committee. Learn more on the City's website.
