Measure: For accurate food measurements, use labels or measuring cups. When unavailable use your hand as a guide.
Golden rules of food tracking: If you bite or drink it, write it! Anything that touches your lips should be recorded.
Collect all the information you can obtain. The more specific the journal, the more it will help long-term.
Recording manually is great, however MyFitnessPal, MyPlate and Cronometer are a few food and beverage recording apps that can be a useful tool if using your phone is easier. Regardless of your method, just be sure to record, record, record!
What to Record:
- Time of the meal or snack
- All foods and drinks consumed (including add-ons, e.g. condiments on a sandwich, cream/sugar in coffee, etc.)
- How much was consumed
Reminder: No one diet is perfect or right for every body, we are all different. This includes how and what we eat. The goal is to be nutritionally sound!
