Minister's Musings

Dear friends,

Happy Easter! What?? Wait a minute….Easter was last week. It's over! Well, no, actually Easter is just starting. I didn't realize until Seminary that Easter isn't a day. It’s a season, like Christmas, Advent, and Lent.

Just like the season of Christmas lasts for 12 days and begins on Dec 25th with the Feast of the Nativity, Easter began on Sunday with the Feast of the Resurrection, which we commonly call Easter Sunday. But Easter lasts for 50 days and ends with Pentecost (penta means 5 and pentekoste means 50th). So during the Great Fifty Days, as we call it, the Church continues to sing Easter hymns and tell the stories of how the risen Christ changed lives and transformed the world. The Easter Candle will be lit in place of the normal white Christ candle for the next 7 Sundays to remind us that there is nothing stronger than the power of the resurrection!

This week, we will hear about our Eastern Orthodox friends celebrating Easter a week later than we do. Why is that? I’m glad you asked! Easter is dated in the Western Church (That's us) using the calendar. It's the “1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring equinox”.

This means Easter shifts based on the lunar cycle after March 21st.

In the Orthodox traditions (Greek, Russian, Armenian, Coptic, Syrian, and others), Easter is simple: The Sunday after Passover. Plain and simple. Passover is this Thursday, Easter is the following Sunday. There is, by the way, some talk of recovering the Biblical tradition and having all churches worldwide celebrate Easter on the Sunday after Passover.

So, as I encourage you to keep your trees up for all of Christmas, I would encourage you to celebrate Easter until Pentecost. It reminds us that NOTHING is stronger than God. Even death itself is defeated by the Risen Christ. So splurge on a little chocolate or leave the Easter decor out a bit longer. Remind yourself that in a topsy-turvy world where reality seems like an episode of the Jerry Springer Show, we believe in a God who calls us to love, which we are reminded is the greatest and strongest gift of all.

Introducing our New Members

Mark is a new member but a familiar face in the congregation as he has been a part of the life of the church for 4 years. You may recognize him as a bass singer in the adult choir and as a ringer in the bell choir. He also serves on the Trustees and on the Ministry and Personnel Committee.

Mark chose Wesley-Knox after hearing about Rev. Rob and for the opportunity of being a part of the adult choir.

Prior to his retirement, Mark worked in accountancy with the Hudson Bay Company, with St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto and then with the London Health Sciences Centre.

This year he and his husband, Rev. Bruce Lee, are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Rev. Bruce moved to London in 2015 to take a position at the Metropolitan Community Church. He is now at the InterCommunity Health Centre, working with the unhoused, youth and newcomers.

Mark also volunteers at the London Food Bank and The London Public Library as a tech tutor.

We’re Hiring: Nursery Program Coordinator

Wesley‑Knox United Church is looking for a warm, caring individual to serve as our

Nursery Program Coordinator on Sunday mornings during worship (10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.).

This role provides a safe and nurturing environment for infants and young children while their caregivers participate in worship. The Coordinator plans simple activities, ensures child safety, and supports a welcoming nursery experience grounded in Christian values.

Experience working with young children, First Aid/CPR‑C, and a Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain) are required.

London Food Bank

The LFB collection cart will be to the side of the sanctuary for 3 weeks starting Sunday April 12 to Sunday April 26.

Earthfest London is looking to engage volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help for a couple of hours on Sat April 25 (11am-4pm). Great for high school hours (greeters, photography, set-up).

Climate Action: Clean up leaves in the street/gutters.

Did you know? Water quality is affected by leaves because when they decompose in water bodies, they release nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. While these nutrients are beneficial for plants and soil, an excess of them in water can lead to algae blooms, deplete oxygen, and harm aquatic life. Leaves can also carry pollutants and sediments into waterways.

London Clean and Green: 20-Minute Makeover, Friday, April 17, 2026

Climate Action: Could you organize a 20 min clean up at your business, school, or neighbourhood to pick up litter and help keep plastics out of the Thames River? Start by adding your project to the map. Gloves and garbage bags, as well as arranging pick up of what is collected, are available from the city upon request.

Wed April 22, Mark Earth Day with a Film Screening: Earth’s Greatest Enemy, at Western University’s McKellar Theatre, UCC 2nd fl, 6:30pm free

Art/Ecology retreat by ecological artist Mary Abma and naturalist Larry Cornelis.

Tour an old growth, sugar maple and beech forest with its wonderful variety of woodland spring wildflowers, including some rare species and enjoy the songbird spring migration. Then create an original artwork using mosaic methods and materials. All materials included. No previous art experience required.
