ABOVE THE CLOUDS “THE JOYMAKERS OF THE SKY” Innovative Aviation Program for Children Facing Adversity
Have you ever wondered who flies in those small planes overhead? Thanks to Above the Clouds, a charity in Norwood, more than 500 kids from communities across Massachusetts and New England have had the thrilling opportunity to ride in the copilot seat of a small airplane and actually take the controls in flight. Above the Clouds believes that the connection between mind and body is strong, and that joy is good medicine. What could be more joyful than flying a small plane?
Above the Clouds’ mission is simple – to bring joy and hope through the wonder of flight to children who face great adversity. Kids who have a major illness; kids who have a disability; kids who face food insecurity or family challenges; and kids facing a range of other challenges - from towns across Massachusetts and throughout New England, these kids have flown with ATC. Above the Clouds offers each of these children an individual Dream Flight for a joyful respite from daily challenges, a view of a world wide with possibility, and an infusion of hope to carry forward.
At any given time ATC’s volunteer Joy Makers may include local students, families, videographers, artists, photographers, teachers, airplane buffs, techies, doctors, nurses, corporate groups, pilots who fly their own planes, and pilots who simply love to fly. ALL of ATC’s Joy Makers share a passion for bringing joy and hope to kids in need. These volunteers report that nothing compares to the moment when sparks of hope ignite as kids in the copilot seat realize, “If I can fly an airplane, I can do anything!”
During the current health crisis, ATC has temporarily suspended its group activities but continues to work “on the ground” until its Coronavirus Response Team concludes that it is safe for groups to gather and for kids to take to the skies.

Today's Project: Recycled Bird Feeder

These are super easy for kids of all ages and abilities to create, and you shouldn’t feel limited to using a paper towel tube. Be creative and see what else you can use as a base for the feeder – and share your photos with us!

Paper towel tube, birdseed, peanut butter or shortening, a plate, a dull knife, and some yarn.

  1. Spread bird seed onto a paper plate and set aside.
  2. Cut a piece of yarn about 18” long, for each bird feeder and set aside.
  3. Use a knife to spread peanut butter (or shortening) on the outside of a paper tube.
  4. Roll the paper tube onto the bird seed, pressing gently so the seed sticks to the peanut butter or shortening.
  5. Feed the yarn through the tube and tie a knot at the end. Hang it from a branch in a nearby tree for the birds to enjoy.

Encourage your little ones to become naturalists! Have them take photos and make drawings of some of the birds that come into your yard to feed. It is fun and educational to see which birds are most attracted to your seed. Cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, goldfinches and sparrows are some common visitors in the northeast.
