We are pleased to share with you The Children's Museum of Easton's Mind Body Soul Summer activities! We hope these activities help you all to nourish your minds and bodies and continue bringing joy to your family and community.
Activity for the Mind: Float Your Boat Build a tin foil boat and test out your design by seeing how many pennies the boat can hold without sinking.

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Get your supplies. You will need some 6-inch squares of tin foil, a handful of pennies, and a container or dish pan half-filled with water.
  2. Construct your boat by bending and folding the tinfoil. Predict how many pennies you think your original design can hold without sinking.
  3. Put your boat in the container of water and add pennies one by one until the boat sinks. Take the boat out of the water and count how many pennies the boat was holding. Remember not to include the penny that sank the boat!
  4. Think you can make improvements? Construct more boats and try out different designs. Learn what works and what doesn’t work after each attempt. Consider factors such as the height and thickness of the sides of the boat, the size of the bottom of the boat, and where you place the pennies within the boat.

TRY THIS: See how many pennies an even bigger tin foil boat can hold. What happens if you use 12-inch squares of tinfoil to design your boat instead of 6-inch squares? See if the water affects your results. Try floating your boat in "saltwater" (similar to ocean water) by adding salt to your container of water.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:  When a boat floats, it must push water aside to make room for itself. The water also pushes back on the sides and bottom of the boat; this force is called buoyancy. Buoyancy is what keeps the boat floating. The more water the boat pushes aside due to size and shape, the more force the water uses to push back and support the boat in the water. For this reason, the size and shape of your tin foil boat design determines how many pennies the boat can hold without sinking.

Activity for the Body: Balloon Volleyball

You'll need: a balloon, something to create a net (pool noodle, tape, ribbon etc) This is a super fun activity that can be played inside or outside!

Instructions:
  1. Blow up a balloon to use as a volleyball
  2. Set up a makeshift court. You could put a piece of tape across an entryway, put a pool noodle in between 2 chairs.
  3. Play on! Now you've got your balloon volleyball game!

Activity for the Soul: Healing Mother Earth It's our responsibility to take care of our Earth and is a great lesson for kids about recycling and the importance of keeping our Earth clean. All you need is a pair of gloves and trash bags! Walk local streets and clean up the trash or recycle any bottles or cans you might find. Be safe on the road & be sure to wash your hands when you're done!
Hingham - Conscious Crafting Fridays, 11a through Aug 28th, Weir River Farm. Come to the farm with your children and leave with a useful, sustainable craft such as a Self-Watering Planter or a Mason Jar Suncatcher. After, walk the trails. Separate materials will be provided for each individual and crafting stations will be spaced out and outside. Crafts are appropriate for elementary schoolers and preschoolers. Participants should park across from the Yellow House at 140 Turkey Hill Lane and then we will gather on the lawn outside the Yellow House for our crafting session.

Summer has arrived at the farm and our young chicks, lambs, calves, and piglets that arrived in the spring are growing up! Our fields are green and growing and our cows and horses are out grazing, when not cooling down in the shade. Talk to a friendly farmer and learn more about life of the farm. While you’re here, take a walk on one of our many farm trails and experience all that Weir River Farm has to offer! Tours are offered for groups every half hour. Groups must pre-register for this event in order to participate. Parking located at 140 Turkey Hill Lane, then walk down the farm “chute” to the barnyard.

Marshfield - Swifts & Swallows: Online Fri, Aug 14th, 7p. Swifts, swallows, and martins live most of their lives on the wing, captivating audiences with aerial acrobatics as they catch insects midair and skim pond surfaces to bathe and drink. They build nests not only in nest boxes and tree cavities, but also in chimneys, on the side of buildings, under bridges, and in sand banks. During fall migration, they gather in flocks that can number over one hundred thousand individuals, creating swirling clouds of birds that awe onlookers. This online presentation will introduce these fascinating birds and where best to observe the fall migration spectacle in Massachusetts, New England, and beyond. Presenters: Kathy Seymour, bird and nature lover who has been leading bird trips, teaching classes, and conducting bird banding research at Drumlin Farm for over fifteen years. Jane Sender, an avid birder who enjoys teaching others about birds and co-leading bird trips with Kathy for Drumlin Farm.

Middleborough - Soule Homestead This Summer we have an awesome opportunity for you to visit Soule. Want to snuggle a rabbit? Feed a sheep it’s breakfast? Collect eggs and show your kids your chicken catching skills? You can do all that and more at Soule! In order to keep our visitors as safe as possible, we are not offering our First Farm Fun story hours or our Soule Summer Camp program. In the place of these programs we are instead offering small group visits so that you can still do many of your favorite activities on the farm. Each program has a limit that you can work within to have your extended family or friends join you. We require at least one adult per each group visit. On the farm we have a bathroom which is cleaned daily, we have an outdoor hand washing station and our staff will wear a mask the entire time they work with your group. We ask that everyone in your party (over the age of 3) brings a mask to wear for moments that they will be in close contact with our staff.

Middleborough - Our Farm to Your Table! Dinner Delivered Sat, Aug 15th, noon. 2020 has been a year like no other! Our farmers have still been hard at work growing food in the fields of Soule Homestead. This year is no exception! Instead of offering an in-person celebration of local food, we will be taking the food grown on our farm to your table! These meals are being crafted in collaboration by some of the best chefs on the South Shore. Each meal pack will have enough food for a group of four people. You can enjoy a taste of Soule with your family and friends in your own way, in your own home or other location of your choosing. On the menu is pork from Revival Farm, Chicken from Wolf Trap Hill Farm, Veggies from Plato's Harvest and Bay End Farm and of course dessert. You can opt to pick it up or if your delivery location is within 15 miles of Soule we will bring it to you for an additional charge. Adults on your guest list? Add on the alcohol pack that includes 8 cans of Mayflower Brewing Company beer and a bottle of wine. We invite you to support the work of Soule Homestead while supporting local farmers and enjoying time with your friends and family this summer! If you have questions, let us know at [email protected]. Meal Pack (4 people): $150; Alcohol Pack (8 Mayflower Beers and One bottle of wine): $40; Delivery (available within 15 mile radius of Soule Homestead): $10. Tickets here.
