We are pleased to share with you The Children's Museum of Easton's Mind Body Soul Summer activities! We hope these activities help you all to nourish your minds and bodies and continue bringing joy to your family and community.

Activity for the Mind: Ice Cream in a Bag! Ice cream is a cool and refreshing treat on a hot summer day and what better way to enjoy it than to add a science twist! With some simple kitchen items, your child will be able to shake, shake, shake his or her way to a yummy treat!

MATERIALS:
  • 1 C half and half
  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Ice
  • ¼ C salt
  • Strong ziploc bags- 1 small, 1 large
  • Spoon
  • Winter gloves (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Pour half and half into the small ziploc bag.
  2. Add vanilla and sugar to the small bag.
  3. Seal the bag firmly removing excess air.
  4. In the large bag, fill halfway with ice.
  5. Add salt to the large bag with ice.
  6. Add the small bag inside the large bag. Fill the remaining space of the large bag with ice. Seal the bag.
  7. You may want to put on your gloves. Your hands may get cold for this step.
  8. Shake the bag for 6-8 minutes.
  9. Remove the small bag from the large bag. Rinse off the outside of the small bag, to prevent any salt from entering inside.
  10. Open the small bag. Mix up the ice cream mixture until smooth. Taste and enjoy!

WHAT’S HAPPENING: This experiment works because of the ice used. To make the ice cream, you need to lower the freezing point of the ice so it can freeze the cream. Have you ever seen trucks spreading salt during an icy snowstorm? Salt causes the ice on the roads and sidewalks to melt. When salt and ice mix, the freezing point of the ice is lowered. So, ice cream in a bag can be made!
Activity for the Body: Shadow Drawings Looking to ensure that your kids spend their time outdoors this summer instead of parked in front of various screens? This shadow drawing project is a great way to keep your kids busy outside.

YOU’LL NEED:
  • Paper, pencils, colored pencils or markers, figurines, and a sunny day.

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Set up the figurines at the edge of the paper. Make sure they are in the sun and casting a shadow onto the paper so your kids can trace the outline.
  2. Once the objects are traced, they can have fun coloring them!

THE LEARNING BEHIND IT: Any object that can block the light so no light can pass through is called an opaque object. Your body is an example of an opaque object.
The size of the shadow depends on the angle at which the light is falling on the object. Your shadow keeps changing throughout the day. It is longest in the early morning and the late afternoon. At noon, when the sun is directly overhead, there is little or no shadow at all. That’s because the position of the sun changes throughout the day. As the sun moves, so do the angles of its rays. A long time ago people observed and tracked the length of shadows throughout the day to keep time. The world’s earliest clock was the sun!

Activity for the Soul: Compliments All Around!
It always makes someone feel good to receive a compliment and it nurtures our own souls to make someone happy! Create a compliments sheet to hang up somewhere in your community!

You'll need:
  • A piece of paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Instructions:
  1. Holding a sheet of paper vertically, draw 8 or 9 vertical lines straight up from the bottom about 1/4 of the way up the page.
  2. Turn your paper horizontal and in each section, write a compliment. It could be something as simple as "You are loved," or it could be "you make someone happy." Anything positive that would make someone feel good!
  3. Cut along the vertical lines you created.
  4. Holding the paper vertical again, in the large open space above the compliments, write "Free Compliments. Take one!" You can make this as colorful and decorated as you like.
  5. Hang up the sheet in your community where people will see it. They can then tear off a compliment from the bottom!
Hingham - Conscious Crafting Fridays, 11a through Aug 28th, Weir River Farm. Separate materials will be provided for each individual and crafting stations will be spaced out and outside. On the farm we have a bathroom which is cleaned daily, we have an outdoor hand washing station and our staff will wear a mask the entire time they work with your group.
