We are pleased to share with you The Children's Museum of Easton's Mind Body Soul Summer activities! We hope these activities help you all to nourish your minds and bodies and continue bringing joy to your family and community.

Activity for the Mind: Gelatin Slime Time!

MATERIALS:
Knox unflavored gelatin- three packs, corn syrup, water, food coloring, ¼ measuring cup
(The recipe will make some messy, slimy slime)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Boil water, amount to follow the packet recommendations(3).
  2. Add drops of color to the water
  3. Slowly combine the gelatin and colored water. The mixture will be a little lumpy.
  4. Slowly add ¼ cup corn syrup
  5. Get ready for some messy fun!

WHAT’S HAPPENING:
The science behind slime involves polymers and Gelatin Slime is no different! So what is a polymer? A polymer is something that is made up of a chain of molecules. In this case, when the water/gelatin mixture combines with the corn syrup, a new substance is formed. No longer are the molecule chains of the gelatin mix able to freely flow. The molecule chains are now intertwined with the corn syrup chains and together, create our Gelatin Slime.

TAKE IT A LITTLE FURTHER:
You can add more of the corn syrup, depending on the desired texture and consistency. For example, if you add more corn syrup, you should see the slime will have long strands instead of being chunky. The less corn syrup used, the more contained.  This recipe calls for unflavored gelatin. Will flavored gelatin give you the same results?
Activity for the Body: Family Obstacle Course

Materials:
A driveway or sidewalk, chalk, other elements are optional (hula hoop, ball, jump rope, etc.) Obstacle courses can be created anywhere. For our obstacle course, we’re going to use our driveway.

Instructions:
Here’s a simple and fun way to get the whole family up and moving!
Think of some physical challenges your family could do. For example, jump on one leg for thirty seconds, hula hoop while singing the A B C’s, walk like a crab in a circle three times, etc.
Once you have your challenges, create a starting line on your driveway using chalk. Add arrows, shapes, colors, etc. and design a user-friendly course that will work for all ages.

Take it a little further:
Too easy for older children or adults? Here’s a simple way to make it more challenging. Ask them to multiply each challenge by 2, 3, or 4. For example, “do ten sit ups” would turn into doing twenty, thirty or forty.
Try incorporating a timed element..complete the obstacle course is one minute or less!

Activity for the Soul: Independence Day Gratitude

Materials:
Construction paper, paint, pencil, paint brush(optional if finger painting is not desired)

Instructions:

  1. Trace your child’s hand as they keep their three middle fingers together and their thumb and pinky finger apart (refer to the picture). You are creating Uncle Sam’s torso and legs are one unit using the three fingers held together. The thumb and pinky will become his arms.
  2. Draw a head and top hat at the base of your hand.
  3. Using red, white and blue paints, finger paint Uncle Sam in his traditional attire- blue jacket, stars and stripes, etc. Allow to dry
  4. Once dry, cut out Uncle Sam.
  5. Fold a second piece of construction paper in half to make a greeting card. Glue Uncle Sam to the front of your card.
  6. Write a thank you message inside.

Contact your local nursing home, Council on Aging or Operation Gratitude for sharing options.
