San Diego Black College Expo Offers Scholarships, College Admissions
Through the San Diego County Office of Education's (SDCOE) partnership with the National College Resources Foundation, students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds are invited to attend the Black College Expo™ on Jan. 29.

The Expo features historically black colleges and universities with on-the-spot college scholarships and acceptances awarded to qualifying students. There will also be seminars on financial aid and scholarships for college.

The event will be from noon to 6 p.m. in the MLK Center at Bayview Baptist Church in San Diego. Visit the San Diego Black College Expo website for more information.

Students who plan to attend also have the chance to win a scholarship from the National College Resources Foundation by submitting a short essay on the importance of a college education. The deadline to submit is Jan. 21. View more details about this scholarship opportunity.
Help Students, Families in the Race to Submit
All families should submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) regardless of their financial status, or the college the student plans to attend. In California, undocumented and nonresident students should also complete the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). The California Dream Act (CDA) allows those students to receive financial aid such as private scholarships funded through public universities, state-administered financial aid, university grants, community college fee waivers, and Cal Grants. The CDA also allows eligible students to pay in-state tuition at any public college in California.

Filling out the FAFSA and CADAA can be a confusing, complex process. The San Diego County Office of Education and school counselors across the region have launched the SDCOE Race to Submit to encourage local students and families to complete these important applications. Access resources at the SDCOE Race to Submit website.
Census 2020 Curriculum Training
An accurate count during the census is important for the appropriate apportionment of representatives to Congress. It is also crucial in determining where billions of dollars of federal funding go. In order to better educate our students, and help them have more informed conversations about this topic with their families, the California Census 2020 organization supported the creation of lessons for 5th, 8th, 11th, and 12th grade classrooms. These lessons were developed by the Sacramento County and Los Angeles County offices of education, written by teachers, and piloted in classrooms across the state.

SDCOE will sponsor a one-day training on Jan. 31 to share crucial information about the 2020 Census, help teachers explore the lessons, and provide educators with an opportunity to discuss how to best bring this topic to their classrooms.

The training will take place at the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center. Registration is free, lunch is included, and schools will be reimbursed for the cost of substitute teachers (up to $175 per teacher). This training is offered in partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which is handling the event registration.
