Our Closet is Full!

"John answered, 'Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.'" Luke 3:11

She was devastated. Her home had burned to the ground and she had lost everything. He had a job interview, but owned only sweat pants and tee shirts. She was going to a funeral and had nothing appropriate to wear.

All three of these neighbors recently visited the new GROW Living Stones Clothing Closet at our location in the North Way Christian Community Church in Dormont, where they were blessed to find just what they needed. While each of these folks had a very real need, not everyone comes for specific, sometimes urgent, reasons. Many come simply because they don’t have money enough to buy clothing. What a joy to watch them walk out with clothes they are clearly excited and grateful to have!

Everyone who enters the large, cheery room is amazed at the wide selection of merchandise, all well organized and neatly displayed. “It’s like shopping at a little department store,” said one young woman as she looked through the clearly marked racks of womens clothing. There is also a large selection of clothing for men and children, as well as shoes, boots, and accessories for everyone. Everything is free, some new, most gently used.

The Clothing Closet was created by an enthusiastic and energetic group of GROW Living Stones volunteers who cleaned out an existing space generously offered to us by the church, built and painted shelves, hung curtains, put together clothing racks, and sorted through seemingly endless bags of donated clothing. The end result? An inviting space that someone said rivals some of today’s chic consignment stores.

The staff is also top notch. Several of the volunteers have managed similar non-profit stores, and all know their merchandise and are eager to help the shoppers. They are also an extension of our Mingler Ministry, building relationships with neighbors who return, and gathering information that will help us better understand and meet their needs and challenges.

Everyone is welcome at the Clothing Closet, which is currently open during the time we serve meals the third Sunday of every month, generally from 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm. It is also open from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm as part of My Monday Thing!, which occurs the third Monday of every month. There will also be times when appropriate items, such as warm coats, will be taken from there to our other locations for timely pop up events.

While we currently have no more room for additional donations, we always have room for more volunteers, whether to serve in the Clothing Closet or in one of the other capacities listed in the Get Involved tab on our Website.

GROW Living Stones fosters the cultivation of relationships with neighbors who join us for meals at Living Stones tables. As relationships develop and deepen, GROW Living Stones volunteers come alongside those individuals and families to assist them in navigating the challenges in their lives and encourage them to find hope in Christ as they learn to trust Him.
