We delight in the beauty of the butterfly but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. Author Unknown
One of the more challenging things we try to do at Hammertown is to change things up
every now and again without losing the essence and authenticity of our stores. Sometimes it's hard for all of us to let go of old ideas and the comfort of doing things the same way but without change there is no growth. (Or as Martha Stewart is credited with saying: "When you're through changing, you're through.") That's why we've really been trying to stretch our wings recently: our new in-house design service at The Barn; the makeover of our Rhinebeck store; our upcoming design book and now we're venturing into a weekly radio program. We hope you'll take the journey with us!

Dog Day Cicadas announce the Dog Days of Summer
You know you're deep into the Dog Days of summer in July or August when you first hear that evocative sound.
It is the elusive cicada (sometimes called Dog Day Cicadas) which are heard but seldom seen. The sound is actually the male cicada's mating call and for its size, is impressively loud (over 100 decibels).

This Week's Recipe: Penne with Asparagus, Peas & Mushrooms
This recipe originates from Philadelphia's revolutionary restaurant, White Dog Cafe. My son, Gregg, was a waiter there after he graduated from college and through him I learned of this wonderful restaurant. Their mission was, and always remains, to be a socially responsible business dedicated to supporting farmers and local agriculture. Oh, I did I mention...this recipe is delicious and suitable for vegetarians!
