MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL FASSL

Winnequah Families,

Happy New Year to all! I hope everyone was able to enjoy some family time and spend time relaxing over our winter break. We are excited to see everyone back and ready for the second half of the school year!

The official beginning of our spring semester begins on January 29.

This means we will soon be sharing report cards with you communicating the growth and progress your child is making this year in school. Report cards will be shared with families on Monday, January 29. We will send further communication when these will be ready for viewing in Infinite Campus.

As a district, we use the grade level standards to measure student learning and growth. The standards listed on the report card are end-of-year expectations for students. The progress grades students receive at semester will let you know how they are doing with that end-of-year goal.

Please feel free to reach out to your student’s homeroom teacher or myself with any questions you might have after reviewing your child’s report card.

We will be having several school-wide community-building events happening in the month of January as well. On Thursday, January 25, it is Beach Day at Winnequah, hopefully bringing a little warmth and summer into our cold month of January.

We will be having Winnefest on Friday, January 19. Winnefest is a school-wide event where students will select and participate in fun activities with students from other grades and classes. We are looking forward to mixing things up a bit, having fun with each other, and building a school-wide community.

Wishing you all a safe and healthy 2024!

In Appreciation,

Angie Fassl

WINTER OUTERWEAR RECOMMENDATIONS

Just a friendly reminder:

With the winter weather upon us, please confirm

your child is wearing proper outerwear to school.

We recommend the following items:

  • winter hat
  • mittens/gloves
  • snow pants
  • winter jacket
  • winter boots
  • shoes to change into

Please remember to LABEL EVERYTHING!

We will go outside for recess unless the temperature drops below -10 (wind-chill)

The following guidelines are used regarding winter recess:

  • +10 degrees: Outside Recess
  • -10 degrees to + 10 degrees: Supervisor’s Call
  • -10 degrees: Indoor Recess
  • These temperatures include wind-chills.

It is also recommended that your child has an extra set of clothing at school in those instances where their clothing gets wet from the snow at recess.

Please reach out if your family needs winter outerwear for your student. We are happy to help make sure everyone is prepared for winter!

2024 - 2025 KINDERGARTEN SURVEY

In an effort to prepare for next year's Kindergarten class, a survey was recently sent out to our current 4K students verifying if they will be attending Winnequah next year. The deadline date for this survey is January 3rd. Children that are not currently attending Winnequah, but are eligible for Kindergarten next year, were sent a postcard to respond to the survey. If you know of a family that has a child that is eligible for Kindergarten next year and did not receive this letter/postcard, please have them contact the Winnequah office so they can be added to the list to receive more information about registration for 24-25.

JANUARY SAFETY DRILL

Winnequah will hold a tornado/severe weather (shelter) drill on January 24th, for all students and staff.

The safety of our students is a top priority which is why it’s important for students to be present for monthly drills. This shelter drill is designed to help students understand what they can do to protect themselves in the unlikely case of a critical event. In all cases of a safety drill, our staff will inform students beforehand of the drill and what they can expect so they are fully prepared. We follow best practices to use trauma sensitive language and exercises to mitigate fear and anxiety during the drill.

What your student will experience: Staff will prepare students by explaining the purpose of the drill, what they can expect and what they will need to do during the drill. The drill will begin when the tornado warning alarm sounds throughout the building using the public address system. The noise of the alarm will be loud and the classroom and hallway clocks will display the Tornado Warning. Staff will calmly and quietly guide students to the nearest place of shelter in the building. Once all students and staff are in this space, staff will take attendance to ensure everyone is accounted for. Staff and students will be given the all clear after the building has been identified as safe. After the drill, staff will use trauma sensitive language to help students process the experience. No visitors, staff, or students will be allowed to enter or leave the building during the drill.

Students with sensory and other special considerations will be accommodated according to their needs.

For resources on how to communicate with your student(s) about the importance of safety, visit our website.

SEL JANUARY TOPICS

In January, Winnequah Owls will be learning about empathy and kindness. They will use these skills to practice making and keeping positive friendships and being positive contributors to their communities.

Students in Kindergarten to 2nd grade will learn about the difference between tattling and reporting. Students in 3rd to 5th grade will learn the difference between teasing and hurtful jokes.

Finally, Winnequah Owls will hear about Dr. Martin Luther King and the role that children and students played in the Civil Rights movement.
