MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL FASSL

Winnequah Families,

It’s hard to believe the first month of 2024 has come to a close. As we ended the month, our teachers worked on report cards to share student progress with you.

If you have not yet logged into Infinite Campus to view your child’s report card, please take a moment to look at your student’s progress so far this year! We are so proud of all the learning our students have done. Also, here is some information regarding report cards at the elementary in the Monona Grove School District. If you have any questions about your student’s report card, please reach out to the homeroom teacher or myself and we would be happy to talk more.

Even though February is a short month, we have a lot of fun things packed into this month! February always hosts the 100th day of school, an important mark in the school year for our learners as they complete 100 days of learning!

We have a number of field trips for different grade levels planned to Aldo Leopold, the UW Planetarium, Chazen Art Museum and more. We will be starting our All School Read of the book, Otter, this month. Students in all classrooms will be reading this book as a read aloud and doing activities. While celebrating the diversity of our own students, their families, and our community is always a priority, we will also be celebrating Black History Month with activities in all classrooms during morning meeting and more. We have a school wide dress up day celebrating team spirit for our favorite teams. All of these activities help build our school and classroom communities even stronger.

Our PTO has several fun events planned for the second half of the year, but at the end of this month will be hosting a Friendship Dance on Friday, March 1. Please see below for details and I hope to see many of you there! We are also looking forward to inviting families in for parent teacher conferences next month, so please look for more information on those coming later in February.

It is sure to be a busy, but fun month. I hope you all have a wonderful start to February!

In Appreciation,

Angie Fassl

Winnequah “Cans & Coins” Drive!!

February 5-16

Winnequah Third Graders are holding a Can & Coin Drive to collect items for the St. Stephen’s Food Pantry. This drive is an annual event at Winnequah.

Examples of non-perishable food items are canned or dried fruits and vegetables, canned soups, boxed pasta, bags of grains, and boxed meals. This can include necessity-items (toothpaste, shampoo, toothbrushes, paper towels, etc.).

We are also collecting coins to donate to a local cause: “Open Doors for Refugees”.

Students should bring coins and items to their homeroom classrooms so that 3rd graders can count them and bring them to the collection table. Our goal is 1,200 to beat our goal from last year! Let’s meet or exceed this goal to help families in our community that are in need. Thank you for your generosity and support!

MG SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH PROCESS UPDATE

After more than 30 years in education and over two decades in school and district administration, Monona Grove School District Superintendent Dan Olson announced in December his plans to retire at the end of the current school year. MGSD is now engaged in a comprehensive search for the next superintendent.

In its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration, MGSD will engage all constituents of the district (students, families, staff, community members and other stakeholders) to share their valuable insights, perspectives, and expectations for the next educational leader.

An electronic survey will be available for any Monona Grove stakeholder to share their input and feedback. The survey will be emailed to staff and families in February and will be available on our website for all other stakeholders.

Focus groups will be held in February (both virtually and in-person); dates and times are listed on the Superintendent Search page of our website. More details will be available soon.

FEBRUARY SAFETY DRILL

Winnequah School will hold a lockdown drill on February 19th for all students and staff. Click the button below to read more on how this drill will be conducted.

SEL FEBRUARY TOPICS

In February, Winnequah Owls are going to be revisiting tools for handling strong emotions. We will be reviewing the Zones of Regulation to learn more about tools to help us when we're in the Yellow Zone (anxious, frustrated) and the Red Zone (panicked, angry.) Winnequah Owls will celebrate Black History Month by learning about people who are examples of Black Excellence beginning with Bessie Coleman, the first Black female pilot.

WINTER OUTERWEAR RECOMMENDATIONS

Just a friendly reminder:

With the winter weather upon us, please confirm

your child is wearing proper outerwear to school.

We recommend the following items:

  • winter hat
  • mittens/gloves
  • snow pants
  • winter jacket
  • winter boots
  • shoes to change into

Please remember to LABEL EVERYTHING!

We will go outside for recess unless the temperature drops below -10 (wind-chill)

The following guidelines are used regarding winter recess:

  • +10 degrees: Outside Recess
  • -10 degrees to + 10 degrees: Supervisor’s Call
  • -10 degrees: Indoor Recess
  • These temperatures include wind-chills.

It is also recommended that your child has an extra set of clothing at school in those instances where their clothing gets wet from the snow at recess.

Please reach out if your family needs winter outerwear for your student. We are happy to help make sure everyone is prepared for winter!
