A Statement from President Trumka
|
|
America is turning to the labor movement—the people who wake our country up every single day and keep her running late into the night. More than 60 million Americans would join a union today if they could. But in many places, having a fair union election is nearly impossible. Our labor laws are nearly a century old. Today, these laws are weakening America’s labor movement, not helping us. And the courts have relentlessly whittled away our rights for decades.
That’s why we need the PRO Act. It puts power back into our hands—the hands of working people. The PRO Act is a game changer for union members—and working people who want to be union members. It would allow workers to form a union freely and fairly. No more propaganda campaigns. No more scare tactics. No more intimidation. And this week, we’re running a campaign in all 50 states, targeting all 100 senators. Only the labor movement has that kind of reach.
We know what comes with a union card. World-class apprenticeships. Family-sustaining wages. Strong workplace protections. A dignified retirement. But it’s even more than that. As union members, we know we are stronger together. When you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. The PRO Act has our opponents running scared. The employer community is calling it a “power grab.” You’re damn right it’s a power grab. They have too much power. And we don’t have enough. And we are grabbing power back.

Trumka Calls for Renewal of American Democracy
|
|
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka (UMWA) led a press conference on Thursday, calling for a renewal of our democracy. Click here to read his full speech and click here to watch the press conference. Here is a portion of President Trumka’s remarks:
John Lewis understood the link between democracy at the ballot box and democracy in the workplace. Without the right to vote, there is no democracy. Without the right to form a union, there is no democracy. Nothing less than our freedom is on the line.
The labor movement is appalled at the attacks on voting happening across the country. And let's call it like it is: The target of this suppression is overwhelmingly Black and Brown Americans. That was not a coincidence during Jim Crow, and it is not a coincidence today.
Democracy is not promised. It has to be protected when it’s threatened. It has to be perfected so it can be passed onto the next generation. John Lewis’ life taught us that. It has become clearer than ever: to save American democracy, we need democracy in the U.S. Senate. And that means passing labor law reform and voter protection legislation with a simple 50-vote majority. We cannot allow the minority to block the will of the American people, expressed decisively in the 2020 elections.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka (UMWA) joined Bloomberg TV to discuss the budget proposal that provides the largest tax cut ever for working families, and how important it is for our democracy to pass the PRO Act and voting rights legislation.

Thanks To The Volunteers Who Canvassed To Discuss The PRO Act
|
|
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
This past Saturday, member-activists from around Ohio took to the streets to knock on doors to talk about the importance of passing the PRO Act, the most important labor law reform since the Great Depression. The PRO Act will help level the playing field for working people, balancing the power between workers and corporations.
Canvasses were launched Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Columbus, Athens, Brunswick, Akron, Canton and Youngstown. Over 1,500 union households were visited and several hundred postcards were signed urging Senator Rob Portman to support the PRO Act and thanking Senator Sherrod Brown for championing the measure. If you would like to order postage-paid postcards for your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to sign, click here for the order form.

"It's time to invest in school infrastructure"
|
|
Sisters and Brothers,
Senate Democrats are on the verge of finalizing the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan, totaling $3.5 trillion, which will pave the way for President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. These plans will be the first step toward transforming our economy and will represent the most significant legislation to expand support for American families since the era of the New Deal and the Great Society.
After years of disinvestment, and then the pandemic, it is vitally important for us to invest in school infrastructure immediately. We already know that insufficient prioritization of infrastructure, along with the climate crisis, have resulted in crumbling school buildings, unsafe drinking water and unhealthy air for too many children.
I’m sure many people are wondering what these investments would look like. I’ve been to schools in places like Philadelphia where the windows don’t open. I’ve been to schools without proper ventilation, which the pandemic reminded us is unacceptable. I’ve also been to schools that have been retrofitted and used innovative green techniques to make them not just clean and safe for students but also environmentally conscious.
Our nation’s children have been in dilapidated school buildings for too long. If our lawmakers fail to invest now in school infrastructure, they’re saying the buildings our students learn in don’t matter. They’re saying it’s OK for some schools to have mold or crumbling walls and ceilings. We need to do better by our children. I want every school to be a place where kids feel safe and welcomed, where they have the freedom to thrive.
Investing in school infrastructure right now will create jobs. It will help our students. It will help our planet. It will help our economy. And it will help upgrade our facilities at the very moment our kids, teachers and school staff are starting the hard work of post-pandemic recovery. Nothing says safe and welcoming to our kids more than facilities that are, in fact, both safe and welcoming.
But it’s up to you and me to fight for it.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT president

President Joe Biden Visits IBEW Local 212
|
|
President Biden landed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on Air Force One around 4:10 p.m. where he was greeted by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and his family, and then headed to IBEW Local 212's training facility in the 5400 block of Glenway Avenue to speak.
While visiting, President Biden said “unions are the best” when it comes to training, saying they “built the middle class.” and then added that without electricians the country would “come to a halt.”

Passing the PRO Act and Building the Next Union Generation
|
|
Young labor leaders from across the country joined AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler on Wednesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. ET and discussed the importance of the PRO Act to younger workers.
|
|
PETITION: I support workers and democracy!
|
|
The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act is the labor law reform we need to protect workers and unions. If the PRO Act passes in the Senate, President Biden will sign it into law.
Tell your senators that you support unions, working people and the PRO Act!
Workers’ rights are under attack.
Our outdated labor laws have been chipped away and weakened by anti-worker legislators. Every day, we hear about corporations openly union-busting and retaliating against workers without consequence.
That’s why we need the PRO Act, the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression. If it passes, it would:
- Empower workers to form unions and bargain over wages and work conditions.
- Hold corporations accountable for union-busting.
- Repeal “right to work” laws, which were created during the Jim Crow era to divide Black and White workers.
Strong unions mean higher wages, safer working conditions and dignity for all people who work. Passing the PRO Act is our first step to getting there.
Whether your senators support the PRO Act or not, help us keep up the pressure and make it clear to them that the PRO Act is a priority for working people. Add your name today.
In Solidarity,
Team AFL-CIO

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown Urges Colleagues To Pass The PRO Act
|
|
Ahead of Senate Hearing, Ohio Workers Share how PRO Act Would Protect Workers’ Rights To Join a Union, Help Level Playing Field Between Workers & Corporations
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today hosted a news conference call to promote the passage of his Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which would protect workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain.
“The PRO Act would finally give workers a fighting chance against corporate union-busting tactics,” said Brown. “Unions are all about the Dignity of Work – they give workers a voice in their workplace, and empower people to build careers and build better lives for their families.”
Brown was joined on the call by Tomeka Cooley-Pettus, a Dayton-area union worker who retired from AT&T after more than 14 years. Cooley-Pettus now helps organizing efforts across the country.
“Being in a union provided me and my family with good health benefits, a pension and guaranteed raises that weren’t based on whether a manager liked you or not,” said Cooley-Pettus. “Because of the opportunities a union gave me, I’ve dedicated the rest of my career to helping others get voices in their workplaces. The PRO Act would alleviate hardcore anti-union campaigns many Americans currently face.”
Tomorrow at 10 a.m., Ohioan Gracie Heldman, from Pandora, is set to testify before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee about her experience trying to form a union at the Consolidated Biscuit Company in McComb.
The PRO Act would help level the playing field and give workers a fighting chance when organizing. Brown has championed the rights of workers to organize and negotiate for better wages and working conditions for years, and reintroduced the PRO Act earlier this year.
The PRO Act would:
- Improve remedies for workers and punish companies that violate worker rights.
- Strengthen workers’ rights to join and negotiate for better working conditions.
- Restore fairness to an economy rigged against workers by closing loopholes that allow employers to misclassify their employees as supervisors and independent contractors.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on the PRO Act will be livestreamed and will be available here.

|
"Strong unions mean a strong middle class."
|
|
On Wednesday of this week, Senator Sherrod Brown went live on Cincinnati AFL Labor Council's Facebook Page to talk with Tomeka Cooley-Pettus, a retired communications worker, about the need to pass the PRO Act - Protecting the Right to Organize.
Union workers earn higher wages and have better benefits, more retirement security, and more control over their schedules. Senator Brown is leading the fight to pass the PRO Act in the Senate. Watch the video of that interview above.

ATU Local 627 Attends Memorial Service for Fallen San Jose Sisters and Brothers
|
|
On July 19, In San Jose, CA, ATU International President John Costa and Local 265-San Jose, CA President John Courtney took part in a solemn memorial for our nine fallen Local 265 brothers killed in the tragic San Jose shooting. Our very own Troy Miller (President/Business Agent)
Inga McGlothin (Financial Secretary Treasurer), Frank Harper (Vice President), and Keith Law (Union Steward) made the whirlwind weekend trip to be there for the service.
International President Costa and Brother Courtney called on the VTA and all transit agencies to address mental health in the workplace and safety for all ATU members. Watch highlights from this touching memorial HERE.

Help ATU members impacted by the San Jose shooting
It has been a difficult year for transit workers. But today hit especially hard. The ATU suffered an incredible loss at a Santa Clara VTA rail yard where our Local 265-San Jose, CA members work. There were multiple fatalities and injuries. Nobody should ever have to worry about walking into their jobs and fear for their safety. Survivors of this horrific shooting will be dealing with the aftermath for a very long time.
Our members have always supported our brothers and sisters in dire need and now it’s time we show our support again. We call on all ATU Locals and members to help our San Jose brothers and sisters impacted by this tragic shooting by contributing through the ATU Disaster Relief Fund. Donations can be made online here or by mailing a check to:

Brother Jon Skirvin Needs A Kidney!
|
|
Sisters, Brothers, and Friends:
As some of you are aware, one of our Brothers here in Cincinnati, Jon Skirvin (Plumbers, Pipefitters and MES, Local 392) suffers from Polycystic kidney disease (PKD). PKD is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. Jon's kidneys were at 7% functionality at the time of the taping of the video we're presenting to you here today.
As you will learn from the story, Jon has a wife, a family and much to live for. So, now we are asking that you use the bully pulpit of the AFL-CIO to spread this important information to the 12.5 million Sisters and Brothers in the movement. One of them may just be the solution to Jon's challenge, but certainly many of them can and will learn what it means to be a kidney or other organ and tissue donor and how that very important, life-giving act works.
Below are two links that take you to a short, intro or teaser video that sets the stage for the longer interview that provides the story as well as a wealth of information on the who, what, when, where and why of organ and tissue donation. It is a massive issue that faces tens of thousands of American each and every day. What's more, the answer to every single case is readily available and could be solved in any single day.
Please take the time to watch this video and more importantly, use your vast network to share this video with all our Sisters and Brothers. Without meaning to be melodramatic, a man's life depends on it, as do the lives of tens of thousands more that are in the very same life-threatening situation in which our Brother Jon Skirvin now finds himself. So, take a moment -- or maybe a little longer -- and listen to our story and how you can help...
Thank you in advance for helping with this very, very important work. If we Sisters and Brothers in Labor are not perfectly suited to rise to this challenge, no one is. If there is a truer illustration of "Unity and Solidarity," I have not seen it. So please, spread the word. And please, share!
Unity and Solidarity forever!
Brian

Ohio AFL-CIO: Southwest Field Rep Update

HB 294: Ohio Anti-Voter Bill
On May 6, 2021, Cong. Bill Seitz (R-30) introduced HB 294, a new voter bill meant to harm the democratic process in Ohio by making drastic changes to Ohio election Law. According to the Ohio Democratic Caucus, HB 294 would:
- Limits counties to one ballot drop box location for 10 days before an election—regardless of how large or populated a county is.
- Eliminates one of the busiest final three days of early voting - Monday.
- Two forms of ID would be required to apply online for a mail ballot and vote-by-mail voters would be subject to a new three-tier ID rule with strict photo ID as the preference
- If a vote-by-mail ballot is not inside TWO envelopes--the inner envelope and the outer return envelope—it will be thrown out.
- The bill doesn’t add any automated voter registration to the voters’ experience. It continues the same Motor Voter policy in place since 1995. In fact, it explicitly excludes online BMV customers from the opportunity to register to vote.
- Keeps large numbers of young people from the requesting mail ballots online by requiring 2 forms of ID, (incl. photo ID).
- Makes ban on public offices paying return postage even stricter than current law. Paying voters’ return postage would remove a barrier to voting by mail.
For more information go HERE.

Pro Act Summary: The Pro Act (H.R. 842) passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 225-206 by the 117th congress On March 9, 2021. The bill is at a stand still in the Senate. Labor 2021
Every day we get closer to Election Day 2021. As we progress toward that day, we must continue to build and strengthen our Labor 2021 program. In order to build that program, we need to hit 2 big objectives by August. We must….
1.) Get members registered to Vote: With the end of the first phase of Labor 2021, I wanted to take the opportunity to encourage Leaders, Members and Activists to distribute voter registration forms and links to their unions and communities. As you know, the key to winning elections is voter power! Lets build that power by getting our friends and family registered. Please download voter registration or request forms from the CLC today!
2.) Educate members about our endorsed candidates: After endorsements have completed, we will have actions and flyers with our slate of Labor endorsed candidates. I will also have a campaign plan submitted for the CLC to follow through out the Labor 2021 campaign!
