Coming Soon: Apply for Affordable Homeownership with Berthoud Habitat

On September 1, 2025, Berthoud Habitat for Humanity will open the application cycle for our homeownership program. This opportunity provides qualifying families in our community the chance to achieve safe, affordable, and stable housing — a critical foundation for building strength, stability, and self-reliance.

A new application package and detailed information will be available soon, outlining eligibility criteria, the selection process, and the responsibilities of Habitat homeowners. We encourage community members to spread the word to friends, neighbors, and colleagues who may benefit from this life-changing opportunity.

By partnering with us through homeownership, families not only purchase a home with an affordable mortgage, they also join a supportive community of volunteers, donors, and advocates committed to helping them thrive.

Meet Katie Koritnik: Championing Stability Through Shelter

For more than a decade, Katie Koritnik has helped people make some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives through her work in mortgage lending. Now, she brings that deep knowledge and even deeper compassion to her new role as Homeowner Services Director at Berthoud Habitat for Humanity.

“Habitat felt like a natural next step,” Katie shares. “I’ve always loved helping people navigate homeownership, but now I get to do that in a way that’s also purpose-driven and rooted in community.”

Katie’s passion for affordable housing is personal. In her years in lending, she saw how quickly life can change, illness, job loss, divorce, and how destabilizing those moments can be when housing isn’t secure. But she also saw something powerful in her own family: after her grandmother’s divorce, she relied on owning two homes, one inherited, one lived in, to create a life of resilience and choice. “What I witnessed was freedom. She had options, stability, security… and that stuck with me,” Katie says.

“Housing can be the first step toward independence, wealth, and long-term strength.”

To Katie, affordable homeownership is about more than having a roof overhead. It’s about creating space for people to dream again, plan for their future, and fully participate in their community.

“If you’re constantly struggling just to live, it’s hard to focus on anything else,” she explains. “But when housing is stable, people have the capacity to grow, give back, and support others. And when we help others, we all benefit. ”

In her new role, Katie is focused on walking alongside Habitat applicants on their journey to homeownership and preparing them for long-term success. “Just because someone buys a home doesn’t mean they can afford it long-term,” she says. “I hope to expand our reach and deepen our education efforts, so they can truly thrive.”

Katie is already inspired by the outpouring of support she’s seen from the Berthoud community. “People here really show up,” she says. “I’m excited to become more deeply connected and entrenched in the community, to build relationships, and to help grow awareness about how Habitat’s work goes far beyond building houses.”

When she’s not guiding future homeowners, you’ll likely find Katie outside, camping, dirt biking, or relaxing at the lake with family and friends. Her love for the outdoors mirrors her passion for building stronger foundations, for individuals, for families, and for the place we all call home.

Habitat Hoedown 2025: A Night of Fun & Purpose

Last year, the Habitat Hoedown wasn’t just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of what’s possible when a community comes together. Laughter filled the room, boots hit the dance floor, and by the end of the night, we had raised enough to help more families find the stability of home.

This year, we’re dreaming even bigger. But we can’t do it without you.

We’re currently seeking event sponsors, auction item donations, and, of course, we’d love to have you join us on Saturday, November 1st, for a night of purpose, generosity, and joy. Every ticket sold, every item donated, and every partnership formed helps us build homes, community, and hope right here in Berthoud.
