BHNA Historic Walking Tour

This summer and fall of 2025 has been an active season of community events in Bluff Heights starting with our Summer of Architecture Historic Walking Tour on Sunday, August 24th led by BHNA Board members Stephen Sutton and Chris Hogan. The tour included a guided walk through our neighborhood to highlight select historic homes and architectural styles. The tour ended in a historic home on Vista and included more than 30 participants, generating more than $600 in donations for BHNA. Thank you to all who participated in donating, Donna Sievers & Lee for hosting and Long Beach Heritage for partnering to make this event such a great success!

Neighborhood Clean-up

BHNA Neighborhood Clean-ups continue to grow in popularity thanks to our many dedicated and caring residents. Our Saturday, August 30th  clean-up was held in partnership with Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association and was the BEST PARTICIPATION EVER! THANK YOU to our hosts at Tru Nature Juice Bar @ 2225 E. Broadway who donated smoothies and juice to power our pick-up volunteers. It is greatly appreciated! Our next clean-up event will be TOMORROW on Saturday, November 8th from 10 AM until NOON at Rose Park Coffee Roasters located at 3044 E. 4th Street (at Freeman). We supply all the tools you’ll need to help clean up and you’re welcome to join us when you can for as long as you’d like.

Neighborhood Forum- CERT

Bluff Heights Neighborhood Forum on Wednesday, September 10th at 6 PM @ Immanuel Place was dedicated to EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS and the introduction of our local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).  Local Fire Department Captain Garrett presented valuable emergency information for residents and families and answered many questions from the audience. Our generous Port of Long Beach Sponsorship allowed for emergency supply giveaways like flashlights, radios, whistles, multi-use tools, water storage containers and fire extinguishers. Bluff Heights continues to strengthen their CERT neighborhood network and could use your help in educating neighbors or in the event of a local emergency. You may reply to this email or attend one of our CERT meetings held on the last Sunday of each month at 5 PM. The next CERT meeting will be held on November 30th at 5 PM at Immanuel Place (located at Obispo & 3rd Streets).

Lost Railway Walking Tour

Have you seen our new historic interpretive panel on the Temple side of JugBand at 2771 E. Broadway? Sponsorship funds from the Port of Long Beach allowed Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association to design and install an educational panel that’s not to be missed! Our unveiling event held on September 16th. hosted 20-25 residents who were there to see a first glimpse of the striking new graphic describing the history of Railway Street (now Broadway) and the Pacific Electric Railway (once the most sophisticated electric railway system in the world). The informative panel also tells the story of the Bungalow Grocery that once thrived where JugBand is now located today. Special thanks goes to local resident Rick Schank for the outstanding artwork on the panel.

BHNA then launched our new Lost Railway Walking Tour on September 27, 2025 to continue providing education on the history of our beloved district, highlight several historic homes and businesses along our Broadway corridor and provide a neighborly networking opportunity ending with a picnic luncheon in Bixby Park. Stephen Sutton, President of Bluff Heights, led the enlightening tour which included a stop at JugBand to view Bluff Height’s newest historic interpretive panel and highlight the Pacific Electric railway service. The tour included a stop in our neighboring Lowena Drive Historic District for a visit with local resident, fellow historian and retired architect Val Pfeifer. A glorious picnic with assorted foods and snacks from the farmer’s market provided a great social networking opportunity for those in attendance.

Halloween in the Park

The annual Tent & Treats event in Bixby Park on October 26th held in partnership with many other local neighborhood groups was a tremendous success. Bluffy (BHNA’s newest mascot) made an appearance to cheer on kids decorating their mini pumpkins and gourds given away at our BHNA booth. Thanks to volunteer Sharon Blackburn for her artistic inspiration, Bluffy and our many BOD members who helped make this Halloween another great success in Bixby Park!

Mann Elementary

BHNA also celebrates with Mann Elementary and the PTA at their annual Tents & Treats event held on October 30th. Parents are invited on Mann’s campus with their kids to visit many different sponsored booths with games, snacks, and treats. The auditorium was even converted to a spooky haunted house this year! Bluffy, our BHNA mascot, was also in attendance to help pass out our salty snack giveaways and wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween.

BHNA continues thrive in hosting special events and educational programs thanks to oue many dedicated volunteers as well as generous donations from many local residents as well as contributions from 2nd District Council Representative Cindy Allen and ongoing Port of Long Beach sponsorship funds.  Please consider a donation to Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association to help us fund administrative costs such as website hosting, email communications, office supplies and insurance. Any amount of contribution is greatly appreciated and helps us support more collaborative community events, educational programming and clean-ups. We also have volunteer opportunities available. Simply reply to this email!

Do you want to help local neighbors and residents?

BHNA needs your HELP!

BHNA is seeking volunteers willing to dedicate an hour or two each week to assist the President and Board of Directors with ongoing communications. This volunteer should be comfortable posting to social media (Instagram and Facebook) and using FB/IG messenger.
