Board Certified Nurse Executive Advanced

APP manager at BCH Oakland, Hani Gutierrez, CPNP-PC, recently obtained Nurse Executive Advanced board certification (NEA-BC). The NEA is a professional certification for nurse leaders demonstrating advanced expertise in nursing administration and organizational leadership, covering areas on high-level finance, resource management, and system-wide strategy. She was celebrated as the BCH Strategic Implementation Hero for her Gallup engagement scores. Congratulations Hani, on your achievements, your support of APPs and your leadership.

OHNS APPs Shine at Conference

Led by Regina Gould, PA-C (in photo: middle), and in collaboration with physician faculty, the UCSF Health Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery APP team hosted the first-ever APP breakout session during the September conference, 2025 UCSF Otolaryngology Update. This groundbreaking session highlighted the essential contributions of the over 3,000 APPs currently practicing in Otolaryngology, showcasing their vital role in expanding patient access and enhancing care delivery. Gould presented on the management of epistaxis, Kali Koziol, PA-C (in photo: left) shared insights on tinnitus, and Pamela Chan, PA-C (in photo: right), delivered an impactful discussion on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. Their presentations exemplified the expertise and dedication of APPs, celebrating their integral role in advancing the field and fostering interprofessional collaboration.

NPIII travels to Berlin To Present Her Work
Jessica Brennan, NPIII in the Pediatric Transplant Surgery Depattment traveled to Berlin, Germany for the International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA) conference. At the conference not only did she moderate a session on ethics and organ allocation, but she presented data on kidney transplant patients receiving IVIG while being treated for severe polyoma BK viremia. She is also an active member of the infectious disease committee for IPTA.

Inaugural NP lead for the Department of General Internal Medicine
Molly Kenward, MSN, FNP, is the inaugural NP lead in the Department of General Internal Medicine (DGIM). Molly graduated from UCSF's Family Nurse Practitioner program and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She leads a group of twenty APPs and hopes to create opportunities for them to lead group visits for the management of many chronic conditions seen in the outpatient setting.

Bernice Cheng, NP Pediatric Neurology BCH Oakland

Since 2007, Bernice has provided excellent care for children with complex neurological conditions that include medically refractory epilepsy, migraine and tension headaches, motor and vocal tics, Tourette syndrome, developmental delay, and neuroinflammatory diseases. Bernice was recently recognized by her team for helpfulness and respect, "Thank you for always being so helpful to the nursing team and showing us so much respect! We appreciate everything you do!"

Renew your DEA
Reminder: UCSF employees are exempt from paying the $888 DEA registration fee for new or renewal applications. Instructions are found here. Also, learn about the one-time DEA education requirement (effective in 2023) to complete 8 hours of continuing education on the topics of treatment and medication management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders.

American Academy of Nursing Names Christine Miaskowski as a Living Legend
The living legend award is the academy's highest honor, recognizing nursing trailblazers for their outstanding contributions to improving health and advancing the nursing profession. Christine Miaskowski, RN, PhD, FAAN is the ninth UCSF School of Nursing Living Legend Recipient. Christine retired in July 2025 after 35 years of research to understand the risks and reasons for pain and other symptoms in patients with cancer. She has published more than 750 papers and received more than $75 million from in funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute on Aging. Virtual Visitor Experience--discontinued
The Virtual Visitor Experience Zoom program was launched in early 2020 to support virtual communication for inpatient during the pandemic, allowing patients to connect with their families while reducing staff exposure. Overtime the persistent technical challenges and resource constraints hindered its full integration into APeX. These limitations ultimately let to the programs discontinuation effective September 9, 2025.
Please encourage the patient to use their personal devices for virtual communication through platforms such as Google meet or FaceTime. Please reach out to amy.kuwata@ucsf.edu with any questions.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Below are highlights of our colleague Rubi Alva de Hickson, DNP, RN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, PHN
Rubi Hickson was invited by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to represent Hispanic nurses along with the National Association Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) National President Dra Veronica Vital be part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Washington D.C. Rubi was one of three main organizers of the Inaugural California Chapters of NAHN Conference on September 13th. She brought together all seven chapters for the first time in 50 year history of NAHN and was the featured speaker for Advancing Health Equity Through Policy: Advocacy Strategies for Building Bridges, Leading Change, and Achieving Impact. As the National NAHN policy and advocacy chair, Rubi was proud to support U.S. Congresswoman Nanette Díaz Barragán as she introduced House Resolution 757 expressing support for the designation of September 22, 2025 as National Hispanic Nurse Day.

Miles for Migraine San Francisco

The annual Miles for Migraine San Francisco event will take place in Golden Gate Park on Saturday October 25, 2025. This walk/5K race started b a patient advocate here in San Francisco is in its 17th year. Funds raised help benefit migraine research and training at the UCSF Headache Center.
