Gun violence and mass shootings: A tragic week
Three mass shootings occurred in a seven-day span in the United States last week. One of them was in our own diocese, in Dayton, Ohio.
Bishop Breidenthal released the following statement via his Facebook account early Sunday:
“My heart is heavy this morning with the tragic shootings yesterday in El Paso and last night in Dayton. My prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the community. This is the second time in less than a year that a gunman has ruthlessly claimed lives in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. Please join me in praying for an end to the epidemic of hate and violence that is sweeping our country.”
The bishop’s staff has been collecting information and resources around gun violence and making them available on the diocesan website at
http://diosohio.org/gun_violence_resources/
. Information includes ways to contact your state and national representatives, links to events and vigils, ways to help the victims or get involved in gun-law lobbying, and other resources.
Most notably, an
inter-denominational prayer vigil will be held at Christ Church, Dayton
on Wednesday, August 7, at 7 p.m. Details can be found at
https://www.facebook.com/events/2351403144979648/
. A demonstration against violence in the city of Cincinnati will take place on Sunday, August 11 at 4 p.m. More information is available at
Staff members will continue to add information to the page as it becomes available.
