Ordination of the Tenth Bishop February 17

God willing and the people consenting, the Rev. Canon Kristin Uffelman White will be ordained bishop on Saturday, February 17 at 11 a.m. at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus. Everyone in our diocese is invited to attend in person, and the service will also be livestreamed on the diocesan website.
The diocese has negotiated a block room discount for the nights of February 15 and 16 with the Hilton Columbus Downtown.

Bishop Wendell N. Gibbs will be chief consecrator at the ordination in place of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, who is recovering from a series of health setbacks.
Reservations are not required, but your RSVP will help us plan. Please be sure to reserve a spot if you need child care during the ordination service so we have as many caregivers as we need. Make a reservation and volunteer to help.

Episcopal Community Ministries grant application deadline January 31 | |
Episcopal Community Ministries (ECM) provides grants for congregational ministries working to help our Ohio neighbors overcome challenges. ECM will offer two granting cycles in 2024.
Apply for a grant by January 31 using the form on the diocesan website.
The second grant cycle will start accepting applications on June 1, and the deadline will be June 30.

Lawrence Home Association Academic Grant for Minority Women
The Lawrence Home Association Academic Grant for Minority Women helps finance the post-secondary education of minority women, regardless of age, who are affiliated with an Episcopal church within the Diocese of Southern Ohio. The 2024 application deadline is March 28.

Weekly online gatherings of Beloved Community Circles will resume beginning today.
Tuesday evening circles meet weekly from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning today, January 30, and Friday morning circles will gather from 10 to 11:30 a.m. beginning on February 2.

Beginning on February 15, a new gathering in Cincinnati called cuppa provides an opportunity to listen to one another as we share stories from our lives. Bring your lunch if you like and join us as Joey Taylor from BeSpoken leads a time of conversation and sharing stories.

Using Picture Books for Racial Healing: a Dismantling Racism Certification Course
Picture books offer an excellent way to discover, discuss, and share stories about topics that many people did not study in school but that are crucial to the work of repairing, healing, and seeing God in each other. Registration is open for Dismantling Racism training sessions taking place in the coming months. Miriam McKenney leads the trainings, which take place on Zoom.

Creation Care and Environmental Justice Author Book Talk
On Thursday, February 29 from 7 to 8 p.m., the Creation Care and Environmental Justice Commission will host author and climate activist, Heather McTeer Toney, as she talks about her new book, Before The Streetlights Come On: Black America’s Urgent Call for Climate Solutions, on Zoom.
McTeer Toney brings her background in politics, community advocacy, and leadership in environmental justice to her exploration of why and how Black Americans are uniquely qualified to lead national and global conversations about systems of racial disparity and solutions to the climate crisis.

Bethany School hosts open house, offers tuition break for Episcopal families | |
Bethany School, Ohio's only private Episcopal school, will hold an open house on Sunday, February 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet members of the school community and tour the campus, which has the most energy-efficient and sustainable education buildings in the Midwest. Register on the Bethany School website.
Beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year, families that are active members of Episcopal congregations in the diocese will receive $1000 off tuition each year. Bethany School will also provide a 60 percent tuition remission to all employees of Episcopal congregations in the diocese as well as staff of the Diocese of Southern Ohio, Procter Center, and the Society of the Transfiguration.

St. John's, Worthington, celebrates 220th anniversary in February
In February 1804, a group of Episcopalian settlers from Connecticut held the first services for a new church they called St. John’s in Worthington and Parts Adjacent. St. John’s, Worthington, will celebrate its 220th anniversary on February 4, at both 9 and 11:15 a.m., with a festive coffee hour between services.
On the actual anniversary, Tuesday, February 6, at 7 p.m., St. John's will hold a celebratory evening that will include the St. John’s choir singing movements from Franz Schubert’s Mass in G and a newly commissioned piece by Episcopal composer Jessica Nelson in honor of St. John’s 220th anniversary.
Admission is free; a free-will offering will be accepted to support St. John’s music ministry.

Housing and Homelessness in Cincinnati
Two upcoming sessions of an ecumenical series on housing and homelessness in Cincinnati will convene community members who want to respond to a marked increase in conversation and reaction to the homeless population in the Clifton neighborhood. The series, hosted by faith communities that advocate for using our Christian values to address poverty and homelessness in our society, include:

The Philadelphia Eleven documentary showing Feb. 10
Film celebrates the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women
Christ Church, Dayton will host a free screening of the documentary The Philadelphia Eleven on Saturday, February 10 at 1 p.m. in the Eichelberger Forum of the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch at 215 E 3rd St. This free event is made possible by a generous grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio's Faith in Life Committee.
Learn more about the film, which tells the story of eleven brave women ordained as Episcopal priests in 1974, two years before the ordination of women was approved by General Convention.

Connections between Social Justice and Creative Arts
On Saturday, February 10 at 2 p.m., the Oasis at Grace, a ministry of Grace Episcopal Church, College Hill, will host a conversation about a mission in East Africa. Snacks and drinks, and an art exhibition, will also be available.

Choral Evensong
The Church of the Good Shepherd, Athens, will offer choral evensong on Sunday, February 11 at 4:30 p.m. Prelude of cello/bass and organ music performed by Marcus Bravo, cello and bass and Marsha Reilly, organ will begin at 4:15 p.m.
A free will offering will be taken to support the June Black Guest Musician fund.

Red Door Community Concert February 16
Holy Trinity, Oxford, will hold the fourth concert in the Red Door Community Concert series on Friday, February 16 at 12:15 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Masks are suggested. The concert will also be streamed live on the Holy Trinity YouTube channel.
The event features the duo of Siok Lian Tan, piano, and Tze Yean Lim, violin, playing Twentieth Century composers from the Americas.

African American Native American Connections
Saturday, February 3
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Native American Ministry Council of Christ Church Cathedral will present African American Native American Connections, a workshop focusing on the connections between African Americans and Native Americans, on Saturday, February 3 at the Cathedral. The day will be led by the Rev. Brother Simeon Powell, CG (Cherokee/Saponi), deacon-in-residence at St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Rocklin, California.
