Black History 365

Can you believe that being black in Miami in the days of Jim Crow was a challenge?

Believe it.

DANA ALBERT DORSEY

 (1872 – February 29, 1940)

Meet Miami's first black milliionaire who built a real estate empire in the face of segregation, creating housing, schools, and parks for the Black community. His legacy includes landmarks like Dorsey Park and the Dorsey Memorial Library.

"Dana Dorsey, a carpenter, comes from Georgia with the proverbial $5 dollars in his pocket to Miami to take a job with the railroad. Carpenters were in short supply, guys with a skill like that, and he worked with FEC that brought him down here. He started making money and set some aside for investment in land. He would buy a chunk of land for $25-30 dollars and as a carpenter he would build the building, sort of like the shotgun houses, and then sell those buildings and he just accumulated a fortune." said historian Paul George.

"It's a huge name. For a man who saw a need for his people to have housing," said Dorothy Fields, found of the Black Archives.

BLACK HISTORY 365

It is important. Our history is an intrical part of who we are and it goes far beyond the 28 days in the month of February. For the last 4-years, the eMFTH has been featuring BH facts weekly, which is a testament to how much history we have. Keep joining us weekly as we continue to explore and highlight Black History 365!

Benefits of memorizing Scripture & techniques

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teachings and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers43 And awe came upon each soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongs and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
