About the Office of Veterans Support

The Long Beach Office of Veterans Support (OVS) was established in October 2022 upon the recommendation of the Veterans Commission in its Veterans Strategic Plan. It serves as the infrastructure to carry out the goals, objectives and strategies outlined in the plan. The nine-member Veterans Commission now oversees and coordinates the activities of the OVS.

Announcing the First-Ever Long Beach Honors

Veterans Banner Program

Who Is Eligible for the Veterans Banner Program?

The City of Long Beach is accepting nominations for the first-ever Long Beach Honors Veterans banner program through March 31, 2024. The community is encouraged to nominate a veteran, living or deceased, who was in Active Duty, Reserve or National Guard to be honored with a light pole banner.


To be eligible, the nominated veteran must meet one of the following criteria:

 

  • Born, raised or currently working or residing in Long Beach
  • Educated in Long Beach 
  • Formerly stationed at or worked at the Long Beach Naval Station or Shipyard, which comprised the former Long Beach Naval Complex and closed in 1997, or the Long Beach Naval Hospital, which closed in 1993

How to Nominate an Honoree

for the Veterans Banner Program

Applicants for the Long Beach Honors veterans banner program will be asked to:


  • explain why the veteran should be honored
  • provide a short bio for the nominee
  • send a high-resolution photo (black and white or color) of the nominee
  • grant permission for the use of the veteran’s photo on a light pole banner


Nominate yourself or another veteran who meets the eligibility criteria by filling out the online nomination form. Nomination forms will be accepted until March 31, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Important Information About Photo Submissions for the Long Beach Honors Veterans Banner Program

The photo must be of sufficient quality and resolution for a light pole banner.


Any printed photos must be scanned. Do not take a picture of a photo.


Photos should show the nominee from the shoulders up, looking at the camera (similar to a school yearbook photo).


There should not be any shadows on the face of the individual.

Veterans Commission Meeting

The Long Beach Veterans Commission usually meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m. This month, the Commission will meet on Tuesday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. Find our meeting agendas and minutes by clicking on the button below.
