I want to invite you all to my Thankful Heart Dinner on Tuesday, November 25 from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM at McBride Park. I am hosting this dinner in partnership with The Westin because I know many families are still feeling the impact of the delays in SNAP benefits, and to spread holiday cheer. This gathering is designed to provide support, connection, and a warm meal during a time when many in our community are facing increased financial stress. I want to share my sincere appreciation with all of our partners who help make this event possible. Thank you to Vice Mayor Uranga, Long Beach Parks, Recreation, & Marines, Love Beyond Limits, Highgate, Midtown BID, and DJ Sokin. There will be free food and an opportunity drawing for essential goods. I hope you will join us as we come together in community and gratitude.

I had a wonderful time attending the Dedo Coffeehouse grand opening. I am committed to supporting small businesses. Small businesses like theirs are the foundation of our local economy and help strengthen our neighborhood across the corridor. Congratulations to Sarah and Scott!

I am proud to celebrate the grand opening of the Zephyr Housing Homekey Project, led by Linc Housing in partnership with the County of Los Angeles and the City of Long Beach. My team recently attended the grand opening and shared how meaningful it was to witness these buildings transformed into permanent supportive housing for our neighbors in need. I had the opportunity to tour the project in July and was truly impressed by this work. With these new units, Linc has now created ten thousand homes for people experiencing homelessness, an incredible milestone that reflects their unwavering commitment to stability and community.

My team also attended the LB co-lab Demo Day event. Thank you to the Long Beach Technology & Innovation department for putting on the event and the challenge grant to make the Anaheim corridor safer. I have constantly advocated for the revitalization of the corridor and am happy to see such improvement ready to be made. The final selections will be made in December. I cannot wait to see who the winner will be.

The November 18th council meeting passed an item that I wanted to bring to your attention to

Item #26 : City Attorney draft an ordinance amending Long Beach Municipal Code (LBMC) Chapter 10.82 (Spectators Prohibited at Street Races, Sideshows, and Reckless Driving Exhibitions) to prohibit the willful promotion or organization of illegal street races, sideshows, or reckless driving exhibitions on social media or any form of promotional material and to return to the City Council within 60 days with the proposed ordinance language.

The amendments will:

1. Formally exempt accredited news reporters from the existing spectator ban so journalists can document incidents without penalty; and
2. Prohibit individuals from intentionally soliciting, inducing, or facilitating illegal street races, sideshows, or reckless driving exhibitions

I am happy to share that the City Attorney will begin drafting an ordinance that will make our streets safer.

The next City Council meeting will be on December 2nd.

The Long Beach Food Access Fund is a citywide relief effort that will provide direct support to trusted local organizations already feeding Long Beach residents — food banks, pantries, and community nonprofits who serve families every day.

For many Long Beach families, this shutdown means an immediate loss of a critical resource for purchasing groceries and meeting nutritional needs. Together we can help families choosing between paying rent and putting food on the table.

The City of Long Beach and Office of Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro proudly present the 38th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration, a family-friendly event honoring the life, legacy and values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event will take place Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, in Central Long Beach.

The 2026 festivities will begin with the parade kickoff at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street, followed by the park celebration from noon to 5 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park (1950 Lemon Ave.). The park celebration will include a main stage with live entertainment, a kid zone, food and merchandise vendors, and more.

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration is a longstanding tradition that celebrates the diverse community of Central Long Beach. This festival serves to honor and keep alive the ideals of Dr. King through arts, remembrance and meaningful perspectives.

Local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community groups interested in participating in the parade may submit a parade application now through Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. Participants are encouraged to incorporate appropriate elements that honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, such as quotes, photos, banners or flags.

The City is also seeking friendly, eager and enthusiastic volunteers to support the parade and park celebration. Volunteers must be ages 18 years or older, and responsibilities will include standing at barricades to ensure the safety and enjoyment of parade participants and spectators, staffing the information booth, trash collection and general assistance with event set up and break down. Residents, local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community groups interested in volunteering at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration can find more information and sign up for volunteer shifts via the online registration link.

Additionally, community members are invited to nominate grand marshals for this year’s parade and celebration. The City is seeking people whose work embodies the legacy of Dr. King and those who have made a lasting impact in areas such as civic engagement and service; social justice advocacy; philanthropy; youth recognition; arts, sports and culture; and community achievement.

The City of Long Beach is rolling out residential organics collection for City-serviced accounts as part of the State of California’s mandatory Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy (SB 1383) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote waste reduction. SB 1383 aims to keep organic material out of landfills by diverting yard trimmings and food scraps into dedicated green carts.

Organics Collection Rollout Schedule

The City is rolling out the program in phases based on regular collection service days. For addresses with multiple service days, the schedule may be adjusted based on service needs.

Residents will receive a mailer with a start date and a new green cart before service is set to begin.

Upcoming Increases to Utility Rates

The Long Beach Board of Utilities Commissioners has approved rate adjustments as part of the upcoming $397.4 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026. Starting October 1, residents will see a 12 percent increase in water and sewer rates. For a typical single-family home, this means an average monthly increase of $8.26 for water and $1.47 for sewer.

In addition, gas rates will rise 15 percent in August, with another 12 percent increase set for April 2026. This results in an estimated monthly increase of $4.67 for the average household.
