Welcome New Commissioners | |
In June, several members of the original Veterans Commission completed serving their fourth and final consecutive terms. The City of Long Beach recently welcomed five new Commissioners, all of whom are Veterans. Their photos and service branches are listed below.
The Veterans Commission is seeking three new Commissioners for Council Districts 4, 8 and 9, respectively, to begin their terms in January. If you are interested in joining the Commission and reside in one of these Council Districts, please email veterans@longbeach.gov for application details.

Council District 6: U.S. Navy Veteran Antawnette Blade is a Rating Veterans Service Representative for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Council District 1: Lt. Colonel Jim Goodin, U.S. Air Force, Retired, is an active community volunteer.
Council District 7: U.S. Army Veteran Nick Sramek is currently a Senior Project Leader at The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo.
Council District 2: U.S. Marine Corps Veteran James Schotter is a Squad Leader for the Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN) in San Pedro.
Council District 5: U.S. Army Veteran Victor Hill is Founder/CEO of MyRUCK, an HR SaaS start-up focused on Veterans benefits.

In May, 25 Veterans banners were installed on Carson St. between Clark St. and Woodruff Ave., east of Long Beach City College's Liberal Arts Campus. The banners will be displayed until May 2025.
The City’s first-ever Veterans Banners program is a success! City Council allocated funding to support the Veterans Banners program in 2025. A call for honorees will be issued early next year. Look for an announcement in a future newsletter.

Lone Sailor 20th Anniversary on October 13th | |
Commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Lone Sailor, the U.S. Navy’s 249th birthday and the history of the Navy in Long Beach all in one event! The Long Beach replica of the Lone Sailor© statue was dedicated on October 13, 2004.
Date: Sunday, October 13, 2024, @ 11 a.m. Location: Bluff Park @ Ocean Blvd. & Paloma Ave. Presented by Partners of Parks. Enjoy a ceremony, live music and refreshments.

Stand Down on October 16th

The Long Beach Veterans Administration (VA), in partnership with the Long Beach Area Veterans Collaborative and more than 40 service providers, will host a Stand Down on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Veterans Park (101 E. 28th Street).
The Stand Down offers homeless Veterans and Veterans at-risk of homelessness access to vital resources and services in the areas of housing, employment, health care, substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, benefits counseling, and more.

Councilmember Mary Zendejas’s office hosted the event, renamed Vito's Dog Parade, in Lincoln Park. The event not only included the parade and awards ceremony, but also a resources fair for Veterans and pets.
