Dear Neighbor,

At the November 11th City Council meeting, my colleagues and I focused on ways to strengthen public safety across our city. I supported and advocated for several key public safety items, emphasizing the importance of using data to identify and address hot spot areas so that our resources are directed where they are most needed.

I truly appreciate residents who shared and continue to share their concerns about safety in our neighborhoods. Public safety remains a top priority for me, and I am committed to working in partnership with residents, city departments, and community organizations to create safer neighborhoods for everyone.

Item #37 was revised to include a report back from the City Manager in 90 days. This report will include:

• A citywide, data-driven analysis of violent crime incidents, calls for service, and gun violence, expanding the definition of hot spots to include smoke shops and liquor stores in addition to bars.
• An equitable, citywide deployment strategy for public safety resources such as walking beats, guided by this data.
• A holistic analysis of peak crime hours, not limited to late-night activity.



Together, these efforts will help ensure that we are addressing community safety concerns proactively and equitably across the city.

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a federal funding bill that would end the federal government shutdown. The president signed the bill to end the longest federal shutdown in history. While Californians have already begun to receive November SNAP benefits, I still want to make sure residents have access to additional support. Below is a list of local food banks in our district that are available to assist anyone in need of food and groceries during this time.

I had a wonderful time attending the Asian World Film Festival this week. My team joined the CNAC meeting, which I was proud to sponsor, featuring special guest John Malveaux, a descendant of a Civil War veteran. They also attended the Cambodian Veterans Inc. 50th Anniversary celebration, where we presented certificates to the honorees.

The City of Long Beach is rolling out residential organics collection for City-serviced accounts as part of the State of California’s mandatory Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy (SB 1383) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote waste reduction. SB 1383 aims to keep organic material out of landfills by diverting yard trimmings and food scraps into dedicated green carts.

Organics Collection Rollout Schedule

The City is rolling out the program in phases based on regular collection service days. For addresses with multiple service days, the schedule may be adjusted based on service needs.

Residents will receive a mailer with a start date and a new green cart before service is set to begin.

Service is set to begin in October 2025 for District 6!

Upcoming Increases to Utility Rates

The Long Beach Board of Utilities Commissioners has approved rate adjustments as part of the upcoming $397.4 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026. Starting October 1, residents will see a 12 percent increase in water and sewer rates. For a typical single-family home, this means an average monthly increase of $8.26 for water and $1.47 for sewer.

In addition, gas rates will rise 15 percent in August, with another 12 percent increase set for April 2026. This results in an estimated monthly increase of $4.67 for the average household.
