I understand how challenging this time is for many families in our community as we enter the 37th day of the federal government shutdown. The shutdown has temporarily paused SNAP benefits, leaving many households uncertain about how to meet their basic needs.
To help ease this burden, our office is sharing a list of local food banks and community resources here in Long Beach that are ready to support residents in need of food and groceries during this difficult time.

I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween! My team and I had such a great time at the 4th Annual Whittier Elementary Fall Family Gathering, especially passing out candy to all the little ones. It’s always a joy to celebrate with our local families and see our community come together for some festive fun.

The City of Long Beach invites you to join us for the Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from noon to 4 p.m. at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.). This free, family-friendly event honors our veterans and those currently serving in the United States military.
The celebration will feature a veterans and community resource fair, food trucks and a beer garden, a veterans recognition ceremony, flyovers with historic aircraft, a kids’ zone, bootcamp-style obstacle course, and live performances by The Satin Dollz and Knyght Ryder, along with all-day DJ sets by Mr. Quick. Flu vaccinations will also be available on-site.

| | ICYMI: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN | | |
On Sept. 30, 2025, the Federal government failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded. As such, a federal government shutdown is in effect.
However, the City of Long Beach wants to assure our community that basic municipal services will continue without interruption.
Impacts on Day-to-Day City Services
At this time, the Federal shutdown does not affect the day-to-day services that our residents rely on. City government remains open and operational. City operations continue, including, but not limited to:
- Police, fire and emergency response services.
- Public health.
- Refuse and recycling pickup.
- Street sweeping and road maintenance.
- Public library services.
- Permitting, licensing and inspections.
- Parks and recreation programming.

Regular Agenda The City of Long Beach has resumed in-person City Council meetings at the Bob Foster Civic Chambers, located at 411 W. Ocean Blvd. City Council meetings occur every Tuesday except for the last Tuesday of the month.
City Council meetings are streamed online on Long Beach Television’s (LBTV’s) website, cable channels, and YouTube Channel.

The City of Long Beach is rolling out residential organics collection for City-serviced accounts as part of the State of California’s mandatory Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy (SB 1383) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote waste reduction. SB 1383 aims to keep organic material out of landfills by diverting yard trimmings and food scraps into dedicated green carts.
Organics Collection Rollout Schedule
The City is rolling out the program in phases based on regular collection service days. For addresses with multiple service days, the schedule may be adjusted based on service needs.
Residents will receive a mailer with a start date and a new green cart before service is set to begin.
Service is set to begin in October 2025 for District 6!

The magic of the holidays returns to West Long Beach as the 71st Annual Daisy Lane Parade steps off on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025. Presented by the City of Long Beach and Office of Vice Mayor and Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga, this cherished community tradition will begin at 5 p.m. and feature a festive lineup of holiday floats and participants. A night of dazzling holiday entertainment will also take place on Sunday, Dec. 14.
The holiday parade will begin at 5 p.m. on Daisy Avenue at West Burnett Street and travel south, down the eastside of Daisy Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway where it will make its way around the median and back up the westside of Daisy Avenue and conclude near West Hill Street and Maine Avenue around 7 p.m. Residents may view the complete parade route here.

Upcoming Increases to Utility Rates
The Long Beach Board of Utilities Commissioners has approved rate adjustments as part of the upcoming $397.4 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026. Starting October 1, residents will see a 12 percent increase in water and sewer rates. For a typical single-family home, this means an average monthly increase of $8.26 for water and $1.47 for sewer.
In addition, gas rates will rise 15 percent in August, with another 12 percent increase set for April 2026. This results in an estimated monthly increase of $4.67 for the average household.
