Taste of India: "Beyond the Samosa" Food Walk

Back by popular demand this Spring and Summer 2019! Catch a glimpse of the distinctive Indian American marketplace scene and sample delicious street food while you explore the history and culture of the community on a guided tour of Devon Avenue. Due to expected volumes and since we would like to accommodate everyone, three tours will be scheduled as follows: Sat, May 18 th Sat, June 22 nd Sun, July 14 th from 2:00- 4:00 pm. Ethnic Dialogue program for GEMS Academy

As a fitting prequel to Asian American Heritage Month (May 2019), NIAM conducted a customized educational program for GEMS Academy which included engaging presentations, sari- tying demonstrations, sampling of spices , community interactions and more. This program was led by NIAM board member Happie Datt and volunteer Nita Gangwal . The group of 19 participants included students, teachers and parents. They “ loved the hands-on approach. Inquiry style learning was really helpful for students to understand the complexity and beauty of Indian culture.”

Our Ethnic Dialogue programs attract hundreds of school/ university students and adult groups each year. They are designed to offer a glimpse into the life of the community and explore common ground shared by Americans of all ethnicities. Our programs can be tailored to suit the requirements of your group.

NIAM and Spurlock Museum

NIAM is partnering with Spurlock Museum (University of Illinois, Champaign) to present a semester long exhibit From the Subcontinent to the Prairie: Stories of Immigration and Identity Jan 26 th to May 19 th 2019. NIAM has lent the exhibit several panels including a video titled 'Chicago Voices,' which traces the history of Indian American immigration to Illinois from the 19th century to the present. Padma Rangaswamy and Amita Banerji represented NIAM at the opening event on Jan 27. Rangaswamy introduced NIAM and highlighted the immigration history perspective that is so important to NIAM's mission while expanding on NIAM’s history, programs, growth and future plans.

Navy Pier Holi Gala

NIAM represents harmony, diversity, inclusivity… what better festival to symbolize this than ‘Holi’ the festival of colors! We did a mini series of posts on our social media pages covering #1 the History and Origins , #2 the Religious, Cultural, Social Significance and #3 the Diverse Celebrations of Holi around the world. #teamNIAM participated at the annual Navy Pier Holi Gala on Mar 23 to celebrate this truly global festival with a dedicated stall, handing out fliers to interested revelers, answering questions, engaging with audiences about #NIAMission and generally joining in the festivities as the crowds enjoyed music, dance and colors galore…. on a glorious day marking the beginning of a promising spring 2019! ‘ℌ𝔬𝔩𝔦-ℌ𝔞𝔦’!
