One of the very few images in Washington area photo archives documenting the influenza contagion of 1918-1919, which killed over 500,000 Americans and tens of millions around the globe. Most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection.

Message from the Chief
Other Essential Workers:
The men and women in blue, fire/EMS, and our medical workers are inherently placed in harm’s way due to our professions. Yes, we are “essential” personnel during the current State of Emergency but we cannot forget about the many other essential unsung heroes. The workers in our grocery stores, drug store staff, pharmacists, postal workers, truck drivers are important as well.
These individuals didn’t sign up to go to work each day to face such issues. They haven’t received any specialized training. Despite that, they continue to answer the call and go to work every day to serve their community. In our profession, we often hear from our residents, “Thanks for your service.” On behalf of the West Bridgewater Police Department, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation and Thank You for your service.

Taunton River Watershed Association (TRWA) is looking for a volunteer to help with their Calendar Photo Contest
Needed: A volunteer to take over the coordination of entries for our yearly photography contest. This is a job that can be done remotely on your own schedule, but would require some dedication as the workload is variable. Most of the work occurs in the month before and the week after the entry deadline. All told, it amounts to about forty hours of work from the beginning of July to the first week of August.
Responsibilities would include:
• Checking email correspondence for entries and inquiries
• Download all entry photographs
• Send confirmation emails
• Correspond after the judging with the entrants and send appropriate win/lose notifications
Cool benefits include corresponding with an amazing group of nature photographers and getting to view over 400 amazing photographs of the Taunton River Watershed.

Family Engagement Needs Assessment
Massachusetts is the recipient of a Statewide Family Engagement Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
As a recipient of that grant and in order to learn more about the relationships that schools and families have with one another, DESE must annually conduct an assessment of families’ and educators’ needs related to family engagement. A Warning from the Vermicious Knids
SCRAM!
“But if they’re so fierce and dangerous,” Charlie said, “why didn’t they eat us up right away in the Space Hotel? Why did they waste time twisting their bodies into letters and writing SCRAM?”
“Because they’re show–offs,” Mr. Wonka replied. “They’re tremendously proud of being able to write like that.”
“But why say scram when they wanted to catch us and eat us?”
“It’s the only word they know,” Mr. Wonka said.
Since April is poetry month, here is my first and favorite poet, the very weird Roald Dahl, and the first poem I ever memorized: The Vermicious Knid. It is still recited at family gatherings, a poem to be conquered, really. From
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
: 'Hello, you great Knid! Tell us, how do you do? You're a rather strange colour today. Your bottom is purple and lavender blue. Should it really be looking that way? Are you not feeling well? Are you going to faint? Is it something we cannot discuss? It must be a very unpleasant complaint, For your backside's as big as a bus! Let me get you a doctor. I know just the man For a Knid with a nasty disease. He's a butcher by trade which is not a bad plan, And he charges quite reasonable fees. Ah, here he is now! "Doc, you really are kind To travel so far into space. There's your patient, the Knid with the purple behind! Do you think it's a desperate case?" "Great heavens above! It's no wonder he's pale!" Said the doc with a horrible grin. "There's a sort of balloon on the end of his tail! I must prick it at once with a pin!" So he got out a thing like an Indian spear, With feathers all over the top, And he lunged and he caught the Knid smack in the rear, But alas, the balloon didn't pop! Cried the Knid, "What on earth am I going to do With this painful preposterous lump? I can't remain standing the whole summer through! And I cannot sit down on my rump!"

"It's a bad case of rear-ache," the medico said, "And it's something I cannot repair. If you want to sit down, you must sit on your head, With your bottom high up in the air!"'
