Over five decades, illustrator J.C. Leyendecker helped shape the image of a nation through his rebranding of men's fashion and created dozens of endearing icons delivered weekly to subscribers of The Saturday Evening Post .

Leyendecker and the Golden Age of American Illustration  includes 42 original paintings and 101 Post covers from the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island, and the  American Illustrators Gallery in New York, as well as other materials related to Leyendecker’s work in advertising throughout his influential career.

FAMILY FIRST: Holiday Tour and Card-making

Grades 1-6 with an adult, registration required. All art materials are provided. 
Holidays are all about traditions, and that's one reason we offer this workshop for handmade holiday card-making every year. In addition to learning a little about holidays at Reynolda, visitors will explore holiday paintings and magazine covers created year after year by illustrator J.C. Leyendecker.
WREATH DECORATING CLASS at Reynolda Gardens

We will help you create your own wreath to enjoy throughout the holidays! Each participant will receive a large, full, natural wreath to decorate. We will provide an assortment of natural items to adorn your wreath or you can bring your own decorations. Pruners and gloves are encouraged.

Commissioned by the American Art-Union in 1840, this masterpiece in Reynolda's collection gets a closer look from Curator Allison Slaby and Collections Manager Katie Womack.

A 1917 CHRISTMAS TOURS

Tours depart every half hour between 5–8 p.m.

A specialized tour focused on the Reynolds family at Christmastime 1917, with costumed interpreters who bring to life historical figures who lived or worked on the estate. Also enjoy a demonstration of the original Aeolian organ playing Christmas music.
CAROLING FRIDAYS

T he Reception Hall fills with friends, music, and cheer as we gather around the Aeolian organ for Christmas carols. No advance registration or caroling experience required; music lasts approximately 20 minutes.

In her original adaptation of A Christmas Memory , Robin Voiers portrays Truman Capote’s older cousin Sook in this moving story of Capote’s own humble childhood holiday traditions. This long-standing Reynolda event is now in its 33rd consecutive year.
REVISITING AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION ART: How 'The Most American of American Art' Found a Home

Judy Goffman Cutler will discuss the founding of the National Museum of American Illustration (NMAI), located in Newport, Rhode Island, and how it has inspired a rediscovery of America’s Great Illustrators. She will explore how illustrators shaped and reflected American society throughout the 20th Century, and how their images continue to be relevant today. The presentation will have a brief overview of the significance of several key illustrators, including Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Norman Rockwell, with particular emphasis on J.C. and F.X. Leyendecker .
