Throughout the last year, we have shared updates on our efforts to create a non-police, civilian emergency response team to respond to non-violent calls for service, as recommended in Goal 3 of the Racial Equity and Reconciliation Initiative: Initial Report.
The City of Long Beach is currently leading a multi-agency planning process to establish a multi-disciplinary Community Crisis Response team. This team will respond to a subset of 911 calls related to mental health crises, substance misuse, welfare checks, and other non-violent situations utilizing a prevention and intervention approach. The Community Crisis Response Team will be part of the Health Department. If you are interested or know someone, there are currently four positions open, one of which closes Wednesday, August 31.
