January, 2021
Welcome to our LBPD Newsletter!

As we close out 2020, one of the most challenging years we have all experienced, we want to reflect on some of the outstanding work our employees continue to do every day.
Much like previous years, our focus remained on organizational transformation, accountability, recruitment, and strengthening community partnerships.

In July, we launched the Office of Constitutional Policing with a focus on ensuring the Department is aligned with best practices in policing, legal mandates, and community expectations.
The Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program was established as a pre-arrest community-based diversion model that diverts individuals with repeated low-level drug-related offenses at the earliest contact with law enforcement to harm-reduction-based case management and social services as an alternative to jail and prosecution. As of March 2020, 318 individuals have been referred to the program and 158 were enrolled. Of those, 84% were persons experiencing homelessness.

On-going efforts to reduce, prevent, and deter gun violence throughout the city have led to over 850 firearm seizures and, the arrest of 284 prohibited possessors.

Police personnel participated in over 300 virtual community meetings to promote partnerships and public safety and embraced technology to safely connect virtually with our community.

And 60% of our police recruits represent communities of color.

Stay tuned for more developments as we navigate through 2021!

KEEP UP WITH THE LBPD
We recently promoted new leaders in our organization, including Deputy Chief Robert Smith, who was promoted in May and has been leading our Support Bureau. He oversees our Jail Division, Port Police Division, Security Services Division, and the Training Division in his current role.

Deputy Chief Smith began his career with the Long Beach Police Department in 1990 and has a diverse work experience.

Please help us congratulate him on his new role!
Additional Command Staff level promotions have taken place in the last few months. You can read about our new Commanders here.
On the Patrol Beat

Fireworks enforcement is a year-round effort for the Long Beach Police Department. This year alone, we confiscated nearly 11,000 lbs of fireworks through our investigations of illegal online sales and transportation into the City.
Our officers continue to focus on deterring firearm-related crimes on a daily basis! Our seizures of prohibited possessed firearms continue to climb up and in turn make our neighborhoods safer.

Class 95 began their first day at the LBPD Academy back in October, wish them luck as they move on through their training!
Shop With A Cop

"Shop With A Cop" is one of our best annual traditions, where many of our officers volunteer their time to take a kid shopping. This year, we couldn’t shop together, but it didn’t stop us from making some holiday wishes come true! Special thanks to the LB Police Foundation, LB Education Foundation, and LB Police Officers Association for their support of this valuable outreach program.
