LBPD's New Chief of Police Wally Hebeish Assumes Duties
On January 1, Wally Hebeish assumed his new position as Chief of Police following former Chief Robert Luna's retirement. Chief Hebeish is a 27-year law enforcement veteran and has served the Long Beach Community with the LBPD since 1995. Earlier this month, City Manager Tom Modica warmly welcomed Chief Hebeish into the position and presented him with his new badge.

KEEP UP WITH THE LBPD

Similar to other cities across the nation, the Long Beach community experienced an increase in crime in 2021. In order to meet the challenges posed in 2021, the Long Beach Police Department explored and utilized new resources to better serve the community and fulfill the Department’s vision to provide a safe city for all people.

North Division Coffee With A Cop
In late December, our North Division officers participated in the final “Coffee with a Cop” of 2021. We’re grateful for the hospitality of the local Starbucks, which helped our officers connect with many of our community members and even help make drinks for some of the patrons. We look forward to more of these events later this year.
Academy Orientation Begins for Police Recruit Applicants
We have begun hosting Academy Orientations for our Police Recruit applicants. Academy Orientation is the first step in the hiring process for applicants once they’ve been added to the eligibility list. During orientation, applicants begin their background process and perform the Physical Agility Test which includes a 6-foot wall jump, 165-pound dummy drag, pushups and sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.
ON THE PATROL BEAT
Holiday Commercial Robbery Suspect Arrested
Through great collaboration between detectives, crime analysts, patrol, and assistance from local businesses, officers located and arrested a suspect for multiple commercial robberies that occurred around the Christmas holiday. During the arrest, officers recovered a ghost gun. Amazing work by all involved!
Street Takeover Busted
Street takeovers are dangerous and are not tolerated in our city. Last week, officers quickly responded to a takeover in progress, cleared the area, and conducted a traffic stop which led to the seizure of a replica firearm and the vehicle being towed for a 30-day hold. Great work North Division!

We always encourage our community to report these incidents immediately by calling (562) 435-6711 and 9-1-1 for emergencies.
Officers Hand Out Useful Resources
In early January, officers from our Coordinated Response Team visited local businesses in West Division to chat with community members about commercial robberies and provided some helpful information on how they can reduce their chances of being a victim of a robbery.
IMPORTANT DATES
Human Trafficking Awareness Day
January 11 was Human Trafficking Awareness Day. The LBPD is committed every day to the proactive enforcement of human trafficking and the rescue of victims. Our detectives maintain a victim-centered approach, with the goal of rescuing victims and reconnecting them with their families. We work with local community partners to provide wraparound services to victims and work to bring justice to the victims.
