September/October 2021
Welcome to our LBPD Newsletter!

With school back in session, Halloween this weekend, and the holidays just around the corner, we wanted to share a few safety reminders with our Long Beach community:
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Slow down when driving – keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists!
  • Be sure to look both ways before entering the roadway, and always use a crosswalk.
  • Never drink and drive. Always designate a sober driver.
  • Don’t drive distracted! Put phones and other distractions away before driving.
  • Be alert when walking – avoid distractions whenever possible.
KEEP UP WITH THE LBPD
Provide your feedback in selecting our new Police Chief!
The City of Long Beach is seeking community input for the selection of our new Police Chief! To participate, you can complete the survey online or via hard-copy format at all Long Beach Public Library locations. The survey is available through November 7!
September Coffee with a Cop
Last month, our South Division officers had the opportunity to connect with members of our community at our Coffee With A Cop event. In partnering with a few local businesses, officers got to talk with residents as well as small business owners to help address community concerns.

We are grateful for our community partnerships and for the chance to talk to our great neighbors!
Tip-A-Cop, benefiting SoCal Special Olympics Athletes
We loved participating in the recent Tip-A-Cop event in Belmont Shore. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Southern California Special Olympics Athletes!
National Faith and Blue Weekend
We enjoyed participating in this year's National Faith and Blue Weekend! Thank you to the Long Beach Ministers Alliance for bringing together our Long Beach faith-based community for several events earlier this month!
Gun Buy Back event
Earlier this month, LBPD hosted a Gun Buy Back event to allow residents to anonymously surrender unwanted firearms and receive a gift card. Through this effort, 280 firearms were turned in, which is 280 firearms off our Long Beach streets!

North Division outreach to the business community
In early October, North Division officers kicked off their new program which focuses on business safety. Bike officers rode through the community to provide informational resources to local businesses, and to get to know their community better.

Our officers will be visiting various businesses in North Long Beach over the next couple of months, so please say “Hi!” if you see them around.
East Division Neighborhood Walks
East Division kicked off their Neighborhood Walks Program earlier this month! Over the coming weeks, our officers will be out walking and connecting with our community in neighborhoods and businesses surrounding Rotary Park and the Anaheim Street business corridor.
Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) Graduation
LBPD is proud to congratulate the 17 community volunteers who recently graduated from the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) training academy! Starting November 1, these volunteers will respond to incidents to provide emotional aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events. Congratulations!

On the Patrol Beat
LBPD officers assigned to Metro responded to a potential suicide call. Officers Banuelos and Phillips quickly arrived on scene, climbed up a scaffolding to reach the potentially suicidal individual. They were able to connect with the individual by talking to him and successfully de-escalating the situation. They prevented him from harming himself and had him safely transported to a local hospital. Thanks to these officers for their heroism in a time when seconds mattered – and for saving a life!
Officers joined the Children's Tumor Foundation for their Shine a Light Walk at Shoreline Aquatic Park. It was inspiring to be a part of a great event to combat neurofibromatosis.
A traffic stop for speeding led to the discovery and seizure of a “ghost” firearm and illegal drugs, thanks to the proactive efforts of North Division Officers Lopez, Orloff, Garcia and Hazelwood! Another illegal gun is off of our streets.
