A BLANKET STATEMENT

We're all spending a little extra time at home these days, so it's important to surround yourself with creature comforts like a good book and your favorite blanket. Cozy up with us for this week's storytime as we read Owen , a classic children's story about a little mouse who just can't part ways with his favorite blanket.

Do you have a favorite blanket that's a little too well-loved or is just simply collecting dust in the dark corners of your closet? Fear not, because we have solutions! In addition to Ms. Chenda's tips on repairing a worn and frayed blanket, blankets can also be easily up-cycled! Check out this useful article on many ways you can breathe new life in to your old blankets, including making pillowcases, baskets, and bed caddies.

FROM THE LBPL ARCHIVES
In the strange, high-stakes world of competitive flagpole sitting, people were often unsure of just what the world record was and who held it.  But, for a short time in the summer of 1948, it was generally agreed that the record had been set right here in Long Beach by George “Ozzie” Osborne.  Osborne, a former circus clown, tightrope walker, and department store Santa Claus, sat for 52 days 13 hours and 58 minutes on a 30” by 30” platform at the top of a 200-foot pole at the Virginia Park Gayway section of the Pike.   The pole was constructed between the two arms of the Skyride attraction, the tallest structure at the park at the time.  Osborne was paid $125 per week for his feat, though the park made him buy his own food, which was sent up to him on a rope.  He spent most of his time listening to the radio and smoking seven packs of cigarettes per day.  Osborne’s record, set on September 8, held only until September 19, when his rival, “Shipwreck” Van Nolan, surpassed him in San Francisco.
