Council Action and Department News
Aviles Law (Due to time constraints at the last Council meeting, this item will be read in January.)
On December 14, 2007, the Aviles family was residing in an illegally converted garage when a fire broke out. The family lost lost three young daughters and sisters in this tragedy. This event prompted the City to conduct an investigation on these conversions, and on December 10, 2010, the Council worked with the City Attorney to recognize various provisions of the municipal code that refer to illegal conversion of garages to the "Aviles Law". On April 5, 2011 this change was implemented, and now, Councilmember Andrews will be requesting Council support in order for the City Attorney to draft a resolution that would recognize December 14th, and every second Thursday henceforth as Aviles Law Remembrance Day.
