Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade
This weekend, we celebrated Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride. The parade and celebration attracted thousands of people.Thank you to everyone who came out to support.
Mothers Who Lost Loved Ones to Violence Presentation
On Tuesday, May 14 th , I hosted a Council presentation with City Prosecutor Doug Haubert and Pastor Eagle of Grant AME for Mothers who Have Lost Loved Ones to Violence. We must continue to stand together and fight against violence in our streets. May these mothers continue to have to the strength to move forward and continue to be an example of resilience for the rest of us.

A Message From Edison...
Edison will soon be performing maintenance on the electrical system in the area. In order to perform this work safely, we must temporarily turn off power. This outage will allow us to modernize our grid by making needed upgrades and repairs to increase our reliability. We realize that power outages may cause some inconvenience, therefore we try to isolate outages down to the smallest area possible and complete the work safely and as quickly as we can. We appreciate your understanding as we work to increase system reliability for the future.

Ethics Commissioners Sought
Residents Sought for City Ethics Commission
 
Interested residents are encouraged to apply to serve on Long Beach’s Ethics Commission. On November 6, 2018, Long Beach voters approved Measure CCC which created an Ethics Commission in the City Charter composed of seven Long Beach residents for monitoring, administering and implementing governmental ethics in the City of Long Beach. 
 
The Commission’s responsibilities include the impartial and effective administration and implementation of the provisions of the Charter, statutes and ordinances concerning campaign financing, lobbying, conflicts of interest and governmental ethics.
 
 
Ethics Commissioners serve a four-year term and members can serve no more than two consecutive terms. The Mayor and the City Auditor will appoint two members each, with the City Council confirming the appointments. The remaining three members will be appointed by the confirmed four Commissioners.
 
 
Requirements for all Ethics Commission members are as follows:
  • No member of the Commission, during his or her term, shall currently hold elective office in the City of Long Beach, including the Long Beach Unified School District Board or the Long Beach Community College Board of Trustees.
  • No member of the Commission, during his or her term, may serve as an officer in any election campaign for or against a candidate for any current elected office in the City of Long Beach, Long Beach Unified School District or the Long Beach Community College District, or any City or District measure.
  • No member of the Commission, during his or her term, may be an employee of the City.
  • No member of the Commission, during his or her term, may employ or be employed as a person required to register as a lobbyist with the City of Long Beach.
 
Requirements for the Mayor’s appointments include being involved with local civic organizations with a demonstrated history of involvement in local governance. Requirements for the City Auditor’s two appointments include a background in public policy or public law, governmental ethics or open government matters, campaign finance, auditing of ethics laws and/or protection of whistleblowers.
 
The application is available online at: http://www.longbeach.gov/mayor/action/commissions/ . The Mayor and City Auditor plan to announce their appointees in June 2019. Interested candidates should submit applications by June 7 for consideration. For more information about the Ethics Commission and its duties and responsibilities, residents can review a March 22, 2019 memo regarding the Ethics Commission Implementation
Upcoming Events
MacArthur Master Plan - Steering Committee Updates
Thank you to those who attend the MacArthur Park steering committee meetings where we discussed the preliminary results of the first round of community workshops. We also discussed logistics for the second round of public workshops ( May 18 & May 22 ) and eventual targeted stakeholder meetings. 
City Hall Goes to the Cats for Fourth Kitty Hall Event
Long Beach City Hall will once again become “Kitty Hall” from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, to encourage shelter cat adoptions and promote awareness of Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS). The event will take place on the first level of City Hall, 333 West Ocean Blvd.

Kitty Hall is the City’s largest kitten and cat adoption event of the year. The public is invited to play and cuddle with the kittens and cats available for adoption, and staff and volunteers from ACS will be available to answer questions about cat ownership and accept adoption applications.

At Kitty Hall, ACS volunteers and staff will share information about fostering kittens, including demonstrations on the care and feeding of newborns. The Mobile Adoption Wagg’in will be on site from 2 to 5 p.m. Spay and neuter vouchers will be available to the public at the event, along with a discounted adoption rate of $20 and other special promotions
Free Landlord Workshop to Teach Fair Housing Rights & Responsibilities
Long Beach, CA — The Fair Housing Foundation will be holding a Landlord Workshop at the Neighborhood Resource Center; at 100 W. Broadway #550, Long Beach, CA 90802 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Thursday, May 23, 2019. This workshop is free and open to the public. Attendees will learn how to seek prospective tenants, the rental process, and credit checks. They will also be educated about Fair Housing Laws and their rights and responsibilities as a landlord or property management professional.  
The Fair Housing Foundation services residents of the city of Long Beach. We are contracted by the city of Long Beach and receive funds through the Community Development Block Grants. We educate the public about Fair Housing rights and responsibilities through workshops, training's, and community events. FHF provides mediation and counseling services through our housing assistance hotline 1-800-446-FAIR and walk-in clinics. We also investigate issues of discrimination related to housing.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty - Community Conversations
Gary Tyler sets the stage with his own story of tragedy, hope, and light as the keynote speaker for this conversation on racism and discrimination in the American criminal justice system. He is joined by tenor Nathan Granner and bass-baritone Derrell Acon, who will portray Korey Wise and Antron McCray, respectively, in the upcoming world premiere of  The Central Park Five  by Anthony Davis. The event will feature a robust panel discussion moderated by Kimmy Maniquis, who serves as the Executive Director for the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ).

Wrigley Association   Wrigley River Run & Tadpole Trot will be hosting their 10th Annual Pizza Pig Out Fundraiser Friday, May 31st from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

Long Beach Climate Fest
The City of Long Beach Department of Development Services invites you and your constituents to join us on Saturday, June 1, 2019 for LB ClimateFest, an open house event for the City’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). 
Wrigley River Run - Long Beach’s Premier 5K/10K/10 Mile Run
The Wrigley will be hosting their 12th annual Wrigley River run event Saturday, June 1st.

Enjoy tree line streets in a historical district. Admire palm trees over 1920's homes, as you pass the horse stables, bird watch along the LA River and run underneath the Pacific Coast Highway all in one day! The 10 Miler will take you to the beautiful Dominguez Gap Wetlands.

The kid races are only $5 and that gets them the race, a medal, bounce house time, pizza, T-shirt to the first 300 registered and more.

The 300 yard Toddler Tadpole Trot is for ages 5 & under and the 1K Tadpole Trot is for ages 10 & under.

The 5/10K is only $10 for ages 17 & under. Plus, we have a Stroller 5K which has a dedicated start time.

Upcoming at the Council Meeting...
On Tuesday at the Council meeting, we will be discussing the recommended draft of the ordinance as it relates to tenant relocation assistance for Long Beach renters. You can submit an e-comment here , or show up to the Council meeting at 5:00pm at City Hall.

Miscellaneous
In preparation of the one-year anniversary of the passing of Capt. David Rosa, the Long Beach Firefighters Association will be selling memorial shirts to raise money for an Orange County highway that will be named in his honor.

Rosa was killed in the line of duty on June 25, 2018. The entire Long Beach Fire Department will be wearing memorial shirts on the anniversary Rosa's death.

Long Beach Water - Increase in Financial Incentive
Long Beach Water Increases Financial Incentive for Turf Removal Participation, Increases Square Footage Allowed and Makes Backyard Conversions Eligible
The residential program changes include:
  • Increased the front yard conversion incentive to $3 per square foot (from the current $2).
  • Created a new backyard and side yard conversion incentive of $2 per square foot.
  • Increased the maximum square footage to 5,000 square feet (from the current 1,500 square feet).
The commercial program changes include:
  • Increased the conversion incentive to $2 per square foot.
  • Increased the maximum square footage to 50,000 square feet (from the current 25,000 square feet).

All Lawn-to-Garden projects will include water-wise or California native plants, 65 percent plant coverage, a storm water retention feature, an efficient irrigation system, habitat development and the use of mulch and other natural materials.
Residents that have completed a front yard Lawn-to-Garden transformation in the past may be eligible to transform their side and/or backyards. Customers will be limited to one application/project per fiscal year.

Each spring, Long Beach Water hosts a free Lawn-to-Garden Tour and Festival that features water-wise landscape conversions throughout the city and a water education festival at 1800 E Wardlow Road. The 8 th Annual Lawn-to-Garden Tour and Festival is on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Start your day by touring up to 20 newly transformed gardens and speak to the homeowners about their beautiful, water-wise landscapes. After your tour, join the festival and enjoy delicious foods and beverages available for purchase by our Certified Blue Restaurants, entertainment, learn about ways to be more sustainable and visit our California-friendly plant sale. Summer 2019 LAMP Paid Media Arts Internship
Long Beach Community Action Partnership is pleased to announce that the application period for the Summer 2019 LAMP Paid Media Arts Internship is open! Leadership Academy Mentoring Program is a hands-on paid educational internship for income-qualified youth ages 14-24. Youth participate in one of four creative disciplines: Music Production, Photography, Graphic Design/Screen Printing, and Film/TV Production. Each group of 12 interns gain hands on experience from mentors who are professionals within their creative field. All LAMP participants have access to our studios at our main office in North Long Beach, and are provided industry grade equipment.
 
In addition to working in the studios, LAMP youth participate in various leadership workshops, field trips, and an end of term Summer Showcase event! Youth have the potential to earn a stipend of up to $1000 while they learn!
 
This summer the LAMP schedule for all 4 disciplines is:
 
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12pm to 5:30pm
 
Start date: Tuesday June 25 th
End date: Thursday August 8 th
 
All interested applicants must pick up an application in-person at LBCAP’s main office located at 117 W Victoria St, Long Beach, CA 90805. Our office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm.

The Midtown Business Improvement District (BID) is not a neighborhood association, but a district created to promote and market the Anaheim Street commercial corridor. Its members are all business or property owners along Anaheim, who work together to promote commerce and community partnerships.
