President's Message

This is the final message I will be providing as N-SSBA President.

They say time flies and, oh boy, it sure feels that way as I conclude my 2 years as president of N-SSBA. Add to that, I am completing 30 years of school board service. When you have a passion for something, in this case education, and are busy doing that important work your mind is not on the time that passes until you have a moment to reflect back on it.

I want to extend my congratulations to the newly elected and reelected school board members and for the budgets passed. As school board members, even though we face continued and new challenges, I consider the time spent in the service of children and their educational opportunities, time very well spent and the only reason for serving on a board of education.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to not only avail yourselves of the events, conferences, webinars, knowledge and expertise N-SSBA has to offer but also that of NYSSBA and NSBA. None of us need to face challenges in isolation and there is comfort to be found in the comradery of and networking with colleagues whether they be on your board or another.

On a very personal note, I want to extend heartfelt thanks to the many members of the N-SSBA Executive Committee and staff, as well as those at Eastern Suffolk BOCES and my home district of West Islip, who have given me their support over the years. I will especially miss working as closely with Bob and Lorraine. However, you and they can continue to count on my support and involvement.

Please ensure that your newly elected board members have an opportunity to attend our New School Board Member Orientation Dinner. If you haven’t already signed up, please consider attending NYSSBA’s Leadership in Education Event where you can continue your board professional development and enjoy an evening to socialize with N-SSBA colleagues.

I wish you each a restful summer!

Island Park students unplug for an evening of fun and togetherness

Families from Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School came together on May 14 to enjoy a screen-free evening filled with laughter, creativity and connection during this year’s much anticipated Prime Time event.

Held in two sessions to accommodate all attendees, the event encouraged students, families and staff to unplug from electronic devices and immerse themselves in hands-on activities designed to foster community spirit and shared experiences.

The evening featured a variety of engaging and interactive programs, with standout favorites including the fast-paced Hollyrock Game Show, classic Bingo, a creative Mo Willems-themed paint and sip and personalized bookmark making.

The joyful atmosphere and wide array of activities made for a memorable night that highlighted the power of unplugging and being present together.

Prime Time continues to be a cherished tradition in the Island Park community, reminding everyone of the value of quality time spent with family and friends.

Sayville Elementary Schoolers Celebrate First Responders

Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Sayville School District hosted more than 50 first responders in a parade to celebrate and thank the community’s everyday heroes.

The parade circled the school’s parking lot with musical accompaniment from the Sayville High School marching band, while students and families lined the route holding signs of support.

The annual first responders parade honored family members and friends of Sunrise Drive students who serve. Additionally, the event celebrated all members of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct, the Sayville Fire Department, and Community Ambulance.

Following the parade, first responders were welcomed into the school cafeteria for a reception featuring performances from the fourth and fifth grade orchestras, who played selected pieces, including “America the Beautiful.”

“This is one of the most meaningful and anticipated events on our calendar,” said Sunrise Drive principal Dr. James Foy.

Oyster Bay High School’s Bay News Now wins big at BASH Awards

Oyster Bay High School’s student-run news team, Bay News Now (BNN), made a powerful impression at the Broadcast Alliance for Senior High (BASH) Awards at Hofstra University.

Competing against more than 40 high schools from Nassau, Suffolk, New York City and Westchester, the OBHS team took home three top honors, demonstrating excellence in student broadcast journalism.

The BASH Awards celebrate the best in high school broadcast journalism, highlighting the storytelling, reporting and production talents of students across the region.

The OBHS multimedia journalism and television production program is part of a CTE-endorsed pathway, offering students the opportunity to earn a CTE endorsement on their high school diploma.

Thanks to the vision of Mr. Dollin and the enthusiasm of OBHS students, the BNN program has grown into a model of excellence in student media. The recent accolades at the BASH Awards are just one reflection of the program’s incredible momentum and its bright future.
