President's Message
The start of another year!
Welcome to the new school year. Thank you for your confidence in electing me to be the N-SSBA President.
I want to thank Immediate Past President Susan Lipman for her great leadership over the last two years and her wise counsel.
If you thought that Regionalization was fun, buckle your seat belts, because this year we already know many of the thorny issues we, as school board members, will have to deal with.
We have to deal with the implementation and potential fallout of the Governor’s cell phone ban.
We have to deal with the curricular and instructional complications of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding Parental Opt-Outs.
We have to deal with the potential impact of any mid-year cuts necessitated by the withholding of federal funds.
We have to negotiate the new attacks on DEI while maintaining our principles of making every student feel welcome and valued.
It isn’t all doom and gloom though. This year we all get to have the direct input and participation of student board members. Hopefully their presence will yield not only valuable insight, but will be a visible reminder of why we do what we do.
N-SSBA will continue to advocate on behalf of school boards and local control on Long Island, in Albany and in Washington. If we can be of any help to you or your districts, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
