Stronger Together

The Optimism of Spring

Dwight Wilson, Executive Director

As I write, another spring is slowly inching its way into our valley. Along with the light of longer days, we are encouraged by your support, optimistic for the future, and grateful for all we have accomplished since last spring.

With your generosity, we were able to serve the end-of-life needs of Rogue Valley residents regardless of their ability to pay. We simplified our admission process to assure the fastest admission given our availability, and now 70% of the individuals we serve benefit from third-party support that includes our Care Fund.

This year, we began a pilot program to enhance our culture by providing spiritual support for residents and families. The Rev. Mary Piper is leading the Spiritual Care Program, and it includes the recruitment of eleven experienced volunteers dedicated to supporting all who live, work, and visit here at Celia’s House.

Volunteers play a vital role in our unique model of care, and they are essential to fulfilling the mission and vision of our organization. They serve meals, spend time at the bedside providing companionship, listen to resident concerns, and focus on what is important to them. Our volunteer gardeners arrive every Wednesday to maintain the beauty of our grounds.

As grateful as we are for their invaluable support, the total cost of care is not fully covered by revenue. Celia’s House meets an essential end-of-life need, and as a nonprofit, we rely on fundraising to provide around-the-clock care services.

Looking ahead to the coming seasons, your donations are vital to our important Care Fund, Spiritual Care Program, and ongoing operations.

We hope you will find our services worthy of your support and I invite you to visit anytime your schedule permits.

Many Ways to Make a Difference

Alexandria Castelo, Development & Communications Coordinator

Both Celia’s House and The HUB rely on volunteers to offer the heartwarming care and services that are experienced at both facilities. At Celia’s House, over 75 volunteers offer a variety of talents to care for the residents, their families, the house, and its garden.

At The HUB, over 50 volunteers fill many roles in running the successful resale shop, from accepting, sorting, and organizing donations of clothing and hard goods to resetting the shop floor in welcoming, fun, and unique ways each week. Throughout the day, volunteer cashiers greet shoppers and then share in the excitement of unusual finds as they check out. Volunteers make The HUB feel like home, and its shoppers feel like part of the family.

Trudy Duncan has volunteered with Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice for 15 years, and for over a decade, served as The HUB’s Volunteer Coordinator. She was instrumental in supporting the establishment of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice and its mission. Most recently, Trudy has become a Spiritual Care Volunteer at Celia’s House.

“I have volunteered for most of my life and have always found many rewards in doing so. I have seen firsthand how persistence, coupled with passion, can accomplish big things for a community. I saw that with volunteer dedication, our dream of creating a hospice residence could become a reality. This success has impacted my life forever. Whatever your role as a volunteer, never doubt the good you are doing and the difference you can make.”

A Season of Renewal

Lily Herwald, Director of Development and Communications

We are thrilled to announce that our Spring fundraising campaign will support two critical programs at Celia’s House: The Spiritual Care Program and the Care Fund. These programs are an integral part of our mission to care for and support each resident without regard for their ability to pay.

To help us reach our fundraising goals, an anonymous Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice board member has generously donated a significant amount of money as a matching challenge. Your donation will have twice the impact. Every dollar you donate will be matched up to $25,000 in new contributions until July 31, 2023.

As a nonprofit organization, we depend on your generosity to sustain our operations. Your donation allows us to continue offering kind and nurturing end-of-life care to every resident. We understand that giving to a charitable organization is a significant decision, and we want you to know that your gift will be used responsibly and effectively.

Please donate today to the Spiritual Care Program, the Care Fund, or our operating fund. No matter the amount, every donation will help us continue to provide the best care possible for those who need it most.

Our Spiritual Care Program offers emotional and spiritual support to Celia’s House residents, their families, and our staff, regardless of their cultural or religious background. The program plays a crucial role in meeting the spiritual needs of those we serve during this challenging time.

Additionally, we are fundraising for our Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to those unable to afford residential end-of-life care. Over 70% of our rooms are subsidized in some form, and we rely on the generosity of donors like you to continue offering equitable access to our services.

A Triathlon and Marathon for Celia's House

Alexandria Castelo, Development & Communications Coordinator

Last year, eight local runners signed up to participate in the 2022 Newport Marathon in Newport, Oregon, and dedicated their run to Celia’s House in support of end-of-life care. Shawn Snyder, lead pastor of Living Hope Church, became acquainted with Celia’s House and was moved by what he learned. “I was so impressed when I first came to Celia’s House and saw the sort of care that was being offered. I have personally experienced loss in my own life, and as a pastor, I often support other people who are going through these challenges. Learning about Celia’s House as a resource in our community was groundbreaking. I wanted to look at ways I could help spread awareness.”

Shawn, and seven other runners, came together, and every one of them finished the marathon event in Newport. They raised over $5,000, gave this money to Celia’s House, and shared that they wanted to make this happen again in 2023.

In January, Shawn met with Celia’s House staff and told us that he and another group of athletes were registered for a Triathlon and Marathon in Bend, Oregon this summer. Once again, they selected Celia’s House to be the beneficiary of their fundraising.

Emily Kingsbury, a recent Southern Oregon University graduate, came to Celia’s House in partnership with Living Hope Church and is one of the athletes who will be running the marathon in Bend on June 17th. “I was so grateful for the end-of-life education I received at Celia’s House. Everyone there is so kind and welcoming. And now, I am able to complete a personal goal to run a full marathon, as well as be a part of a meaningful cause.”

Celia’s House and Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice could not be more grateful for our partnership with Living Hope Church. Please consider contributing to these athletes’ fundraising effort. Your donation goes directly to providing end-of-life care at Celia’s House.

Quotes From Families

"The genuine concern, compassion, connectedness, and love was wonderful. My mother was so respected and attended to. Even my brother and I felt special and loved. This is a phenomenal place with remarkable people. The staff made an extremely hard situation manageable. I don’t know how we would have survived otherwise." -Karen
