A Message from Our President |

Welcome to November, which is the month for giving thanks. I hope this message finds you well.
I begin by giving thanks to the many volunteers who have stepped up. They've taken the bull by the horns, and worked diligently to make your organization a true community. They say it takes a village; no truer words could be spoken about our speaker village. We have members selflessly helping members in the Spirit of Cavett which we celebrate each year on November 14th.
Speaking of the 14th of November, we have an incredible program highlighted by Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE, and the first woman president of NSA. Her program is Under the Magnifying Glass: Good to Great Presentations. She is considered THE Presentation Skills expert. I guarantee you will be better on the platform after this program.
Barry Banther, Chair of NSA, asked chapter leaders this month, “What is your chapter doing beyond your monthly meeting to encourage and equip our members?” My answer was, "Outside of our monthly program and breakouts for Candidates and Professional Opportunity, we hold 12 additional events; 8 Project labs, 3 Speaker Labs, and a Happy Hour for a total of 15 chapter events per month." Your chapter is providing you ways to become better on the platform, better in running your business, and better at completing projects to advance you and your business.
We are dealing with challenging times. The best way to overcome these challenges in your speaking business is to become fully engaged with your chapter community. Fifteen opportunities a month to help you. All you have to do–participate.

He continues to write, speak, train, and consult and has worked in more than 25 countries.
To attend the Candidate Program, you must be a current NSA-Arizona Candidate or Professional Member in good standing and register for the general chapter meeting. The Candidate session follows our monthly chapter meetings and runs from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Register in advance for this meeting as this is a different Zoom meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Twice a week, you’ll have an opportunity to work on a specific project in a virtual community space via Zoom. There are three concentrated periods of time of 30-35 minutes each. You can use this to work on an article, proposal pitch, book chapter, blog post, client report, etc.
As you're working, you can be muted to the group and with your video on or off, as you choose. Between these highly productive times, there are three mini-breaks. You can use them to check in on any questions or to get feedback, if needed, on your project.
The meeting dates and times are as follows:
- Mondays from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
- Thursdays from 8:00-10:00 a.m.
The Hosts are Marla Harr and Michele Redmond.

Be a "Fly on the Wall" for Brilliant Speakers at Speakers Lab
Would you like to observe while some of the most accomplished speakers in our industry give practical advice to other speakers? Or how about sitting in the back of the audience when other speakers present so you can observe what works? Well that’s what we do at the Speakers Lab and you’re invited!
Our methodology: We ask presenters what their purpose is and what kind of feedback they want or need. We provide feedback in a structured environment that includes guidelines both for evaluators and for speakers. This helps to provide supportive, constructive, and useful advice.
Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers’ Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 a.m. We’re starting to offer an evening lab on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Both morning and evening labs will include 15-30 minutes for networking at the beginning of the session.
Normally, we would be meeting at NSA headquarters. However, in the current environment, we have changed to an online format. An announcement regarding the Zoom session for the Lab will be sent to you prior to the Speakers Lab. When you respond to that email, to register for that session, you will be provided with a link.
You may attend these sessions as a Guest. However, if you wish to present at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing. We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to present.
In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose, like trying out new material or a new form of speaking. They can also get feedback about marketing materials, web sites, or a book idea.

Where do you live now? Where are you originally from? Do you share your home with pets or family? I've lived in Phoenix, Scottsdale and now in Tempe for many years. I grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. My horse was named Lady and my dog, Queenie. Currently, Kathleen and I have three dogs we love dearly.
Do you have any hobbies, travels, volunteer work, or other interesting things to share? When I was younger, I loved riding dirt motorcycles in the desert. A Honda 175R was my favorite cycle. We had a motor home and pulled the motorbikes behind and traveled throughout the western states.
What is your speaking specialty? I have had several. My first mentors were Cavett Robert and Zig Ziglar. From them, I learned the showmanship side of speaking and how to use humorous stories. I began with mostly motivation for Associations. Later, I focused more on the corporate market with presentations on planning and communication. I learned a lot from psychologists and strategic thinkers that most of my typical audience members would never read or completely understand. I saw my role as studying great ideas from thought leaders much smarter than me. I then translated their principles into actions my audience members could implement and benefit from.
What kind of work did you do before you started speaking? Are you still doing that or other work in addition to speaking? I left the Army as a training officer and was hired by General Electric on a three year management training program. The program was one of the best in the world at the time. I was introduced to hiring, union relations, employee development, and communication. I became a manager in manufacturing and loved the action. I returned to HR to create and implement results oriented training courses that were tied to improving business results. A still do a little bit, but I sure wish it was more. Currently, I do mostly executive coaching and speech writing and coaching. Also, I am developing an internet based training program titled, Moving Up by Managing Up.
When did you start speaking? When did you join NSA-Arizona? My first speaking was in high school speech contests and I was hooked. Living in Phoenix and being mentored by Cavett Robert, I actually helped him launch NSA in the early 70’s. We had created the Phoenix Summer Sales Seminar as a precursor to NSA. I served my turn as National President and was in the first class of CPAE'S, now called the Speaker Hall of Fame.
How have you volunteered for our chapter? I can’t think of a role I haven’t played in the chapter. The friendships developed in chapters are the backbone of NSA.
For you, what is the best advantage of NSA-Arizona membership? Old friends and new ideas. An unbeatable combination. I can hardly wait until we meet together again–I miss you!

When we had our meetings at NSA HQ, you would invariably see me with my friend Fran Lowell. She and I would always take our spot in the front row, right-hand side. It may have appeared that we were an inseparable pair.
I met Fran at a Starbucks in Scottsdale, and learned that she had taught public speaking at Hawaii Pacific University. Within two years she had led their team to a national competition when previously they couldn’t make regionals. I brought her to her first NSA-Arizona event–a Living Room Forum at Neil Dempster’s house. Since then, she and I hardly missed a meeting.
I’m sorry to say that Fran passed away peacefully on the morning of October 7. Please know that you all meant a lot to her. She thrived on the energy that each of you bring. A college teacher, and mother of two daughters (Lisa and Leslie), she was my coach as well. She helped me prepare for my presentation at Speakers Academy 2014; she was a stern taskmaster, but the hard work paid off. I’ll always be grateful for my friend Fran, who worked to make me a better person.
I have come into possession of some of her library. She had many books on speaking, presentation, persuasion, and relationships. In her honor, I will make this collection available to our chapter. Some of the titles include:
