A Message from Our President
Who said there was nothing free in this world? Well, the September monthly education program was free, and it drew the largest number of attendees in quite some time. It was lovely to see so many of you, and I am grateful you are a part of the speaking community in Arizona.

You might be curious as to why we made the September meeting FREE for all to attend. YOUR Board is working hard to provide you with even greater value. We realize that these are challenging times, both professionally and personally, and we felt you needed a financial break. Speaking of breaks–watch your email closely, because we have another treat in store for October. I mean it–this is no trick.

Over the summer, Gwen Hanson, who has served NSA-Arizona for 19 years, decided the time was right for a change and ended her service with us. We thank Gwen for all she has meant to NSA-Arizona. Your Board of Directors quickly got to work on the task of finding new support for your chapter. We are incredibly pleased to introduce you to your new chapter administrator, Suzanne Lanctot, CAE, CNAP.

Suzanne is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP). She has spent her career in nonprofit associations. She is Past President of the Arizona Society of Association Executives (AzSAE) and is a member of ASAE® The Center for Association Leadership. She is the recipient of both the AzSAE President's Choice Award and Member of the Year Award. Suzanne, welcome to our community.

We kicked off the fall with great nuggets of wisdom from Nancy Giere. This month, we have another great program planned for you. Mark Hunter, CSP, known as the Sales Hunter, will present Growing Your Speaking Business During a Pandemic.

Let us not forget that you are not alone. We are a community of like-minded, hardworking, invested speakers, committed to providing benefits to clients and knowledgeable value to attendees.

I wish you all a safe and prosperous month, as we rethink, retool, and reinvent our speaking businesses.

Be well.

P.S. A special note of thanks to our September sponsors, Club Calendar and SpeakerFlow.

Projects Lab
Twice a week, you’ll have an opportunity to work on a specific project in a virtual community space via Zoom. There are three concentrated periods of time of 30-35 minutes each. You can use this to work on an article, proposal pitch, book chapter, blog post, client report, etc.

As you're working, you can be muted to the group and with your video on or off, as you choose. Between these highly productive times, there are three mini-breaks. You can use them to check in on any questions or to get feedback, if needed, on your project.

The meeting dates and times are as follows:
  • Mondays from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays from 8:00-10:00 a.m.

The Hosts are Marla Harr and Michele Redmond.

If you'd like to work on a project, with the support of your peers, email Suzanne or Marla Harr for the LINK 24 hours prior to the session.
Speakers Lab
Get "Fresh Eyes" on Your Content at Speakers Lab

Have you ever gotten a valuable idea or piece of advice you didn’t expect from someone? This happens because we spend so much time working “inside” our craft, we can overlook opportunities that may be right next to us. A smart practice is to get a fresh pair of eyes on your work. There’s no better place to do that than the NSA-Arizona Speakers Lab.

Our methodology: We ask presenters what their purpose is and what kind of feedback they want or need. We provide feedback in a structured environment that includes guidelines both for evaluators and for speakers. This helps to provide supportive, constructive, and useful advice.

Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers’ Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 a.m. We’re starting to offer an evening lab on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Both morning and evening labs will include 15-30 minutes for networking at the beginning of the session.

Normally, we would be meeting at NSA headquarters. However, in the current environment, we have changed to an online format. An announcement regarding the Zoom session for the Lab will be sent to you prior to the Speakers Lab. When you respond to that email, to register for that session, you will be provided with a link.

You may attend these sessions as a Guest. However, if you wish to present at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing. We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to present.

In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose, like trying out new material or a new form of speaking. They can also get feedback about marketing materials, web sites, or a book idea.

Quote of the Quarter: “The Speakers Lab was the biggest reason I joined
NSA-Arizona. You can’t get growth opportunities like this anywhere else.”
- Jake White

Help Spread the Word with #Hashtags
If you’re a social media user who posts about NSA-Arizona events and public speaking, we’d like your help. Please use appropriate hashtags on your posts to help spread the word about us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

What’s a hashtag? Using the # symbol before a word turns it into a clickable link that goes to posts that are organized by that topic. They increase the exposure of your posts to audiences outside of your own followers. For example, if you click on a #nsaaz hashtag, you’ll see posts from others that used that hashtag whether you follow them or not.

You can use multiple hashtags with a single post to boost your exposure even more. Here are some hashtags to consider: #nsaaz #nsaspeaker #nsa #csp #nsarocks #nsacsp #speaker #publicspeaker #publicspeaking

If you haven’t used hashtags before, give it a try. You might find some new friends! Oh, and be sure to follow NSA-Arizona at @NSAAZ on Facebook and Twitter.

Librarian's Notes
Editor’s Note: This feature reminds you to take advantage of our fabulous lending library of NSA Convention recordings.

Yes, I have a YouTube channel. I even have it named under my brand (which is also my Twitter handle). So how many videos do you think I have on my channel? That's right, none. Maybe it's time to do something about that.

So I found Produce a Daily YouTube Channel Working 1 Day a Month by Nate Woodbury from Influence 2019. For example, Nate worked with Kris Krohn to build a channel from scratch to 578,000 subscribers. It had 4.8 million minutes of watch time, and earned $9k in ad revenues. That's good, but the channel also generates $500,000-600,000 a month in sales. Nate says he will share exact steps to follow.

The YouTube advantage:
There are people searching for your expertise, but they don't know you exist. YouTube has two huge advantages over other platforms. Search is one advantage, but Nate simplifies the process with an online tool (mentioned later). The other benefit is YouTube's partner program. Content creators get 55% of advertising revenue.
But there's a bigger benefit: if a video makes money for YouTube, YouTube will promote that video. As an example, Kris Krohn made a video a year ago that got 5 million views just because YouTube promoted it. Kris earned $150K from ad revenue and then made $2M in revenues from sales.

Do your research before shooting videos:
Think of topic selection as a tree with a broad trunk, going out to branches, then to smaller branches, and then to leaves. That's the secret: instead of making a video on a broad topic, make videos on highly specific topics.

Let's say your topic (the tree trunk) is on goal setting. Instead of making a video called "goal setting tips," create videos on what people actually search for. Actual searches are things like, "how to make a vision board that really works", "how to set exercise goals on an Apple watch", or "how to set financial goals for a business." These specific topics are like the leaves. If you make leaf after leaf, eventually you dominate the whole tree on YouTube for the broad topic.

Kris' leaf topics include, "How to buy a multifamily property for no money," "How to find equity," and "How to make $1 million in 5 years." Other topics he's recorded are, "How to invest $5M," and "How to achieve financial freedom quickly."

To come up with your "leaf" topics, start with the branch. Brainstorm all the topic ideas you have. Then see how people search on these topics, using a service called Keyword Magic Tool (semrush.com, subscription starts at $99/mo).

One of Nate's partners tried it using "living room design" as a broad tree-trunk topic. At first, the results will look similar to an Adwords search, but then have the search filter to questions only. Keyword Magic Tool found 2,700 searched questions on the topic of living room design. Doing keyword research will help your video rank, and while you're only getting trickle traffic at first, that's all you need.

Nate will intentionally pick phrases that have lower search volumes, ideally 10-100 per month because there's little competition. You may only get 10 views from search. But they are targeted to what someone is specially searching, and they are likely to watch the whole video. The YouTube algorithm will detect this, and will include the video in the list of suggested videos, and momentum will build over time. The plan is to create content that no one is producing but people are searching for. This lets you rank instantly and impress the YT algorithm. It's simple, but takes consistent work.

The video content:
Because you've done keyword research before filming, make your content specific to the search. If the keyword search finds inquiries like, "How to get rid of strep throat without antibiotics," then make the video about that precisely. Start by saying, "Hi welcome back. In this video I'm going to teach you how to get rid of strep throat without antibiotics."
Let viewers know right away they've found what they're searching for, and they will see you as their hero because you have answered their question. A 10 to 12-minute tutorial video is common. YouTube recommends 7 to 16 minutes.

How to do this one day a month:
The way to do this is to film in batches in a single marathon video day. Nate and his partners often film 20 episodes in a day. You can post one episode a week if you like. But to get YouTube to promote you exponentially, post five episodes a week at a minimum. You already know the title from your keyword research. Turn the camera on, deliver great value and move on to the next one.

YouTube loves consistency, so try and post at the same time each day. Nate posts at 9:30 a.m. YouTube allows you to upload videos and then schedule the date and time they will be published. Make sure the video is uploaded as private or unlisted, otherwise it will appear as if it's been public for some time, but had no views.

Lastly, make your videos look good with appropriate sound and lighting, but don't be concerned about graphics or effects. As Nate says, the more corporate your videos look, the less likely they are to connect. The thumbnail should have readable text that is different from the title of the video, and should be written to generate curiosity.

By the way, Nate's partner Kris Krone (https://www.youtube.com/c/REInvestorTV/videos) has over 1,200 videos, 30.3 million views, and 578,000 subscribers. If you'd like to see Nate's own channel, and many of his videos are on this topic, check out https://www.youtube.com/c/NateWoodbury.

Word Tripper from the Platform

Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!

Allude, elude – To "allude" means to refer to casually or indirectly. To "elude" means to avoid or escape by cleverness or speed; to escape the comprehension of.
