"TMB Update!"
Sherif Zaafran, M.D., of Houston, is the president of the Texas Medical Board. Dr. Zaafran is an anesthesiologist and president of US Anesthesia Partners Southwest Division. He is a delegate for the Texas Medical Association (TMA) and an alternate delegate and member of the Committee on Future Models Anesthesia for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Additionally, he is chair of the Government Affairs Committee for the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and is vice-chair for the Harris County Medical Society Delegation to TMA. Zaafran studied biochemistry at The University of Texas at Austin and received a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston.

"Office for Civil Rights Enforcement & HIPPA Privacy, Security and Breach Notification Rules!"
Valerie Montoya has been with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Southwest Region, since 2005. She began her OCR career by reviewing Civil Rights policies and procedures for Medicare applicants. In 2009, she began investigating Privacy and Security Rule cases. When the Breach Notification Rule went into effect, her caseload expanded to include breach investigations. In 2013, her role as an investigator expanded once more to include Civil Rights investigations. To date, Valerie investigates any case for which OCR has jurisdiction, including compliance reviews derived from previous investigations and media reports. Valerie travels frequently and speaks to the community on OCR’s mission and vision and looks forward to conducting HIPAA and Civil Rights outreach presentations throughout the year.

Biff Franklin Palmer, MD, is Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
Dr. Palmer received his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He then went on to complete a research fellowship in the Department of Nephrology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and a clinical fellowship in the Division of Nephrology at UT Southwestern Medical Center-Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Dharam Kumbhani, MD, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Dr. Kumbhani received his medical doctorate from the University of Mumbai with Honors. He completed a Masters in Science with a concentration in clinical epidemiology at Harvard University. His internship and residency in internal medicine were performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and his cardiovascular training was at Cleveland Clinic. He completed fellowships in interventional cardiology, advanced structural and endovascular interventions, as well as a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he was also Instructor in Medicine/Cardiology. Dr. Kumbhani brings to UTSW a strong background in advanced interventional cardiology techniques. His clinical practice specializes in transradial coronary interventions, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, peripheral vascular interventions and adult structural heart disease interventions.

Arjmand Mufti, MD, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Arjmand Mufti, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Internal Medicine
at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in transplant hepatology.
Dr. Mufti earned his medical degree with honors at United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London. He then trained in internal medicine at Kings College Hospital in London. After completing a research fellowship at the University of Michigan, he performed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago, where he also received advanced training in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology through separate fellowships.
Board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology, he joined UT Southwestern in 2013.

Stanley Cohen, MD, UT Southwestern Medical School

Dr. Cohen is a clinical professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He prides himself on maintaining an academic focus within a private practice group, Rheumatology Associates, where he serves as a physician.
He is a past president of the American College of Rheumatology — and 2016 recipient of its “master” designation. Dr. Cohen is also medical co-director of the Metroplex Clinical Research Center, and co-director of the Presbyterian Hospital division of rheumatology, as well as a member of the Healio Rheumatology peer perspective board.

Srikanth Nagalla, MD, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Dr. Nagalla graduated from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India. After completing his medical oncology training at Drexel University College of Medicine, Dr. Nagalla moved to Thomas Jefferson University and the Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research in Philadelphia for his training in non-malignant hematology. Dr. Nagalla brings to UTSW a strong background in non-malignant hematology, research in platelet biology and medical education. He currently specializes in bleeding and clotting disorders, myeloproliferative neoplasms, bone marrow failure syndromes, and other non-malignant hematological conditions. His clinical practice emphasizes on tailoring of treatment for the patient. Dr. Nagalla’s interests outside of medicine include his family, reading, and golf.

Reverend Caesar Rentie

Reverend Rentie received a Master of Theological Studies from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in 1997 and currently serves as a local pastor for the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal Communications from Oklahoma University. While at OU, Caesar played football for the Oklahoma Sooners. During that time, the Sooners won four Big Eight Conference titles, one national championship title and made four Orange Bowl appearances. Caesar was drafted into the NFL by the Chicago Bears in the 7th round and played offensive tackle under head coach Mike Ditka. In 1991 he was the 1st round draft pick for the New York New Jersey Knights in the World League of American Football. After his football career, Caesar accepted his call into ministry.
