"If you are serious about your climate commitments, now is the time to act with urgency and clarity."

- Jonathan Goldberg, CEO of Carbon Direct

Jon has over 15 years of experience in energy investing and project finance. His focus on climate change and negative emissions extends to his work at Columbia University where he sits on the board of the Center on Global Energy Policy, lectures on energy issues, and helps steer the Carbon Dioxide Management program.

Can you explain what Carbon Direct does in a very simple way?

Carbon Direct brings together the world’s best climate scientists to help companies address their impact on the climate. We measure their emissions, identify actions to reduce them, and find high quality projects that remove remaining emissions from the atmosphere. We provide the insights and expertise needed for companies to take bold, science-backed climate actions, to protect the planet for future generations.

How did you start?

I spent two decades investing in global energy markets at companies like Goldman Sachs, Glencore and running my own investment firm. During that time, I worked closely with exceptional scientists focused on carbon removal solutions and the clean energy transition. I recognized that addressing the climate challenge would require harnessing top scientific talent across disciplines, alongside with technology innovators and commercial expertise. That led me to found Carbon Direct in 2019. Today, we are a global team of over 100 leading scientists and commercial experts, working together to help companies turn climate ambitions into real, credible action.

What makes Carbon Direct unique?

Carbon Direct is uniquely positioned at the intersection of science, technology, and real-world application. What sets us apart is our ability to translate rigorous climate science into actionable strategies that companies can implement with confidence. Our team is behind some of the largest and most complex carbon removal projects and transactions in the world. Our clients include Microsoft, Salesforce, JPMorgan Chase, and Weyerhauseur. They collaborate with us to navigate and shape this critical transition with integrity, precision, urgency, and impact. We have built an incredible team and have been named one of the top 50 startups by LinkedIn for the last two years.

What is one thing that you want the reader to remember about Carbon Direct?

This decade is decisive. The actions we take now will shape the future of our planet. It is crucial we get them right, especially when it comes to carbon removal solutions! Credible climate actions must be grounded in science and deliver tangible, real-world impact. If you are serious about your climate commitments, now is the time to act with urgency and clarity. There has never been a more critical time to mobilize and scale the most promising climate solutions. At Carbon Direct, that is exactly what we are doing with climate leaders to challenge the norm, break down barriers, and advance transformative solutions.

Is there a fun fact about Carbon Direct that you could share?

Our team loves a good karaoke session! It’s become a bit of a tradition at our annual offsite and every time I’m blown away by the sheer talent, confidence, and enthusiasm people bring to the mic. From powerhouse ballads to nostalgic throwbacks, there’s always an electric energy in the room. Some of our best bonding moments have happened with a karaoke mic in hand!
