Chamber Policies Approved at Alberta Chambers 80th Annual Policy Conference
This weekend six representatives from the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce attended the Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC) Annual General Meeting and Policy Conference in Grande Prairie, taking with them four policy priorities. Higher Standards for Animal Welfare, Managing Impacts of Layered Legislation, Clarity Needed in Employment Standards Averaging Agreements and Treatment of Statutory Holidays and Impacts of Significant Minimum Wage Increase policies were all successfully adopted as policies of the ACC.

'The Business Advocacy Committee and the Board of Directors work to engage with members to identify issues and challenges that businesses in our region are facing so that we can effectively advocate for solutions on behalf of our members,' stated Perry Deering, President of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce. 'Through our policy research and development, we created three new provincial policy positions and updated our previous policy on minimum wage. Starting in January 2019, Canadians will begin contributing towards an enhanced Canada Pension Plan (CPP). At that time, employers and employees will begin making slightly higher contributions to the CPP. These will gradually increase each year for the next seven years. Administrative processes will remain the same for employers. Amended T4127 payroll deduction formulas will be published online by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on November 15, 2018, with amended T4032 and T4008 payroll deduction tables following on December 18, 2018. Payroll deductions and contributions can be downloaded here when they become available.
Occupational Health _ Safety Information Session - June 26_ 2018
The Legislative Assembly of Alberta's Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future is seeking input for its review of Bill 201, Employment Standards (Firefighter Leave) Amendment Act, 2018. Bill 201 proposes occasional leave for part-time firefighters to assist in fire services while prohibiting employers, without good cause, from preventing a person to act as a part-time firefighter, if the individual has informed the employer, or from refusing to employ a person because they are a part-time firefighter.
