Constitution Day/Voter Registration Day
Connect with CSU Faculty
Featuring Dr. Reginald Oh
Professor of Law at CSU College of Law
Presenting "To Form a More Loving (Perfect) Union:
Love as a Principle of Democracy, Free Speech, and Racial Equality"
Tuesday, September 17, 2024
11:30 am – 12:30 p.m.
Location: Michael Schwartz Library
Connection Lounge
(1st floor, west of the front desk)
“Connect with CSU Faculty” is presented as part of the Democracy 101 @ MSL event series and will be held on Constitution Day commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
The presentation will explain that love is perhaps the most important constitutional principle of democracy. Love is implied in key parts of the Constitution: the Preamble, the Bill of Rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment. Love is the constitutional glue that can transform a divided nation of us versus them into We the People. The presentation will discuss how love informed Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools in 1954. It will also discuss how love can guide us in navigating difficult freedom of speech issues such as the debate over what books are appropriate for school libraries and classrooms.

This webinar covers some of the issues involved in preserving intellectual freedom and offers suggestions for how you CAN make a difference!

MSL Librarian Insights Substack
The library’s AI Playground Sessions went very well this summer, so we decided to continue to offer AI-related content throughout the year. Based on what we think will work best for faculty, we’ve decided to create a Substack called MSL Librarian Insights where faculty and students can subscribe to receive videos and blog posts related to AI and other research-related topics via email.

Digital CSU Student Showcase
Digital CSU again invites students to submit digital and multimedia projects to its Digital Student Showcase, which will take place on Tuesday, December 2, 2024 from 12pm-2pm in the Student Center Atrium.
Students are welcome to exhibit their digital, multimedia, or multimodal works in a ‘poster session’ format, where presenters display their work on an electronic device and share with audience members about their process of creating it in an casual, conversational setting. Students creating websites, podcasts, videos, infographics, interactive data visualizations or maps, and any other digital or multimedia project should consider presenting their work in person at the Showcase.
Faculty are invited to please share the invitation with their students.
| Questions about the showcase, or digital or multimodal projects? Please contact Ben Richards at b.c.richards@csuohio.edu. | |

Fall 2024 Textbook Affordability Grants
As we have in past years, the library will be offering grants to faculty (this fall ONLY) who either adapt existing open/free content or create their own open textbook. The application and description can soon be found on the Textbook Affordability Grant website.
About the Textbook Affordability Grant
The Michael Schwartz Library, in conjunction with various partners, including the CSU Online (Center for eLearning), offers Textbook Affordability Grants to CSU faculty during the fall semester. The goal of the grant is to encourage and support the creation or compilation of low-cost or no-cost course materials to save students money and encourage student-centered pedagogy. See below for recent textbooks created by CSU faculty for their courses.

New Affordable Resources for Students | |
CSU Faculty who were awarded Textbook Affordability Grants in fall 2023, have created new open educational resources for their students to use this fall semester.
Dr. Brian Mikelbank, Associate Professor, Urban Affairs, wrote UST 290: Urban Geography. This text was compiled as an open-access resource for Urban Geography (UST 290) at Cleveland State University. The course serves undergraduate majors (mostly) in the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs, many of whom go on to careers in city government, urban planning, and community development.
Dr. Mikelbank's textbook can be found at Pressbooks.ulib.csuohio.edu/urban-geography-csu/

Dr. Aviva Vincent, Assistant Professor, Social Work, created Veterinary Social Work, a resource of peer-reviewed publications for students completing Veterinary Social Work coursework.
As there is an abundance of literature available online and in print, it brings together the seminal, foundational, and important reads for students. The guide is divided according to the four modules of Veterinary Social Work: 1. Animal Assisted Interventions; 2. The Link Between interpersonal violence and animal abuse; 3. Pet related grief and bereavement; and 4. Intentional Well-being. There are additional sections for readings as their interests (and coursework) direct. Dr. Vincent's resource book can be accessed from Pressbooks.ulib.csuohio.edu/vsw/.

Jewish Cemeteries Book Written by Local Author
Jeffrey Morris recently published his book Jewish Cemeteries in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County in EngagedScholarship @ CSU. Jewish Cemeteries documents the history of the sixteen Jewish cemeteries in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, using primary sources such as recorded deed transfers, records of incorporation, and plat maps to trace ownership from the time of acquisition to today. It facilitates an understanding of the correlation between each cemetery and its governance with a synagogue or benevolent organization. Details about Jewish Cemeteries and the author can be found at EngagedSholarship.csuohio.edu/clevmembks/69/.
