Academic Writing Club for CSU Graduate Students & Faculty
by Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts & Humanities Librarian, OER and Copyright Advisor
Could you use some structured time to write and receive feedback from colleagues? Do you wish you could graduate with some published academic writing under your belt? Do you have some academic writing that needs polishing to become publishable? If so, this writing club is for you!
Offered by the Writing Center and the Michael Schwartz Library, this writing club is meant to help students and faculty improve their academic writing productivity. Each week we will send a short video and provide resources and advice related to an academic writing topic, and we'll have a synchronous Zoom meeting to review the topic. At least 30 minutes of the meeting time will be set aside for quiet writing to keep you on track! This Spring 2024 semester the weekly 5-minute videos will concern content from Becoming an Academic Writer by Patricia Goodson. You don’t need to have read the book to participate, but it will guide our discussions.
Meetings will occur in Zoom from 3 - 4pm on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12 - 1pm (feel free to pick the weekly time that works for you or attend both!) through May 11th, 2024
| |
Filling out the sign-up form does not obligate you to participate or attend every meeting; it merely puts you on our reminder email list and provides access to the Zoom link each week

The rise of generative AI tools has created significant excitement and concern among educators over the past year. What challenges does AI create for OERs? This presentation will provide an overview of generative AI, provide considerations for teaching with AI, explore the intersections between AI and OERs, and share resources for participants interested in learning more about these topics.

Open Pedagogy and Student-Centered Learning
April 16th, 2024
11:30-12:20pm
Virtual
by Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts & Humanities Librarian, OER and Copyright Advisor
Our students are looking for classroom experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and empowering. One way to achieve this is to employ open pedagogy, an approach to teaching that prioritizes student-centered learning and the use of open educational resources. Join us for a special guest presentation by Heather Miceli, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at AAC&U and former faculty member at Roger Williams University. Heather will share her own experience with open pedagogy and lots of practical tips for how to integrate this approach to teaching into your classroom.
|
|
Dr. Heather Miceli is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Office of Curricular & Pedagogical Innovation at the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), where she is working on a Hewlett Foundation funded research grant investigating the impact of OER on student outcomes.

2024 Library Champions Announcement
We are excited to announce our two inaugural library champions! A library champion is nominated by a library staff member and chosen based on these criteria:
- faculty member was observed promoting the library to colleagues, students, or administrators AND/OR
- faculty member has collaborated successfully with librarians or library staff to improve student learning and/or research
| |
Stephanie Brooks
Dean of the College of Health
Why she was nominated: “Dean Brooks initiated a meeting with the Health Professions Librarian and two Associate Deans. The four discussed ways the library can and should be involved in student learning, faculty research, and program accreditation. She also invited the librarian to a College of Health cabinet meeting to present to and converse with COH directors and department chairs. Dean Brooks' eagerness to integrate the library into the academic life of the newly-formed College of Health will undoubtedly foster more library instruction opportunities and more open and frequent communication with COH faculty, resulting in more meaningful support for students.”
| | |
Stephen Cory
Department of History Chair
Why he was nominated: “Dr. Cory always invites the history librarian to speak to his classes, giving the librarian crucial access to students for information literacy instruction. During class, he actively encourages students to use the library and reach out to the librarian for help, and this kind of advocacy is more valuable than any promotion the library itself can offer. He also actively participates in programs offered by the library, such as the Textbook Affordability Grant and the CSU Writing Club."

Library & Research Help Desk
by Ann Marie Smeraldi, Interim Library Director
Beginning the spring 2024 semester, Reference moved to the User Services desk to create a blended desk that provides one-stop-shopping for patrons. The User Services desk has been renamed the Library & Research Help Desk to reflect this change. Librarians and circulation staff are working together at this desk to provide you with excellent customer service. Get all your questions answered here, check out materials and textbooks, pick up OhioLINK items, receive research help from a librarian, and more. Just look for the "ASK US!" sign.
The Reference Center desk located in the Learning Commons has been renamed Tech Help. IS&T student support assistants will be staffing this desk. They will help you with printing, email, MS Office, basic PC questions, and referrals. They will keep the lab tidy, and the printers filled with paper.
